Tata Motors is exploring CNG and strong hybrid options for its bigger SUVs. Models like the Curvv, Harrier, Safari, and the upcoming Tata Sierra are under evaluation. This move comes as demand for cleaner and more economical fuel options is growing rapidly in India.

Tata already offers CNG in the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, Altroz, and Nexon. In 2024, the brand sold more than 1.2 lakh CNG cars, and sales are expected to cross 1.5 lakh units this year. With this strong momentum, Tata is now considering expanding CNG to its 4.3-metre SUV lineup.
If approved, the Tata Curvv may become the first bigger Tata SUV to get a factory-fitted CNG option. It is expected to borrow the Nexon’s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol CNG setup, making Tata the only brand offering CNG with a turbo engine in India.

The upcoming Tata Sierra is another likely candidate. Tata is closely tracking customer demand in the 4m+ SUV space before taking a final decision. Currently, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota offer CNG in this segment with the Grand Vitara, Victors, and Hyryder.
Tata does not have strong hybrids right now, but the brand may introduce them if the market shifts strongly in that direction. The first models to receive strong hybrids could be the Harrier, Safari, and possibly the Sierra. Strong hybrids offer better mileage, lower emissions, and improved performance.
CNG is growing faster than EVs and hybrids, with a massive 35% growth rate. Tata has also improved practicality with dual-cylinder setups that free up more boot space. Clean fuels like CNG and hybrids will help Tata meet upcoming CAFE 3 and CAFE 4 emission norms.
As Tata prepares for stricter emission rules, the company’s long-term powertrain mix includes 30% EVs, 27% CNG, and 6–10% diesel, with the rest being petrol and hybrids. This balanced strategy will help Tata stay competitive and future-ready.
