Mahindra Thar OG

Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the new-gen Thar, called the Mahindra Thar OG at a starting price of ₹10.32 Lakhs*, ex-showroom. The OG comes as the successor of the three-door Thar debuted in 2020. The Thar OG is based on the new-age platform, featuring revised suspension setup and steering, along with a more powerful engine options. It comes with refreshed styling and safety features over the outgoing model.

The Mahindra Thar OG comes with a redesigned grille with ‘THAR’ branding, LED headlamps with signature C-shaped DRLs, LED fog lamps with a built-in cornering function, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. The SUV rides on newly styled 19-inch alloy wheels; however, the lower variants get steel wheels. At the back, the Thar OG gets a new set of tail-lamps and tailgate-mounted spare wheel. 

The SUV is finished with a new Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery, second-row armrests with built-in cupholders, and keyless entry with push-button ignition. It also gets tilt adjustable steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, manual air-conditioning with rear AC vents, and a rear USB charging port as standard. The Thar OG gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a colour MID in the instrument cluster, a front USB charging port, a 6-speaker audio system, powered ORVMs, Zip and Zoom drive modes, cruise control and a rear wiper and washer. It also gets a wireless charger and a rearview camera. 

Safety Features

The Mahindra Thar OG comes equipped with six airbags, which Mahindra calls “a segment-first 4 Head Pelvis Thorax Shoulder (HPTS) system”. This system is designed to protect the head, pelvis, thorax and shoulder region of front and rear occupants in a side impact. The lifestyle off-roader gets all-four disc brakes, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, a rearview camera, and the front parking sensors. It also gets ESP 9.3 suite that integrates rollover mitigation, traction control, hill-hold control and vehicle dynamics control. 

Engine Specifications

The Mahindra Thar OG is powered with three engine options, including a 1.5L turbo diesel, a 2.2L turbo diesel and a 2.0L direct-injection turbo petrol. The 1.5L unit is capable of producing 119 hp and 300 Nm of torque, and is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox only. 

The 2.2L diesel engine produces 152 hp and 330 Nm, while the 2.0L turbo petrol churns out 162 hp and 330 Nm. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Depending on the variant, the Thar OG can be had in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations. 

The Thar OG is based on the M-Glyde 4G platform that also underpins the larger Thar Roxx. It gets the rear Pentalink suspension with a Watts Link, which is claimed to control lateral movement of the rear axle in a better way. The off-roader also gets Mahindra’s so-called “DAVINCI” damping technology, which also gets Frequency Depending Damping. 

Another big update is that the Thar OG now packs an Electronic Locking Differential (ELD), which can lock the rear axle electronically to ensure power is sent to the wheel with the maximum grip. The SUV also gets dedicated terrain modes such as Mud, Sand and Snow.

Dimensions and Boot Space

In terms of proportions, the Mahindra Thar OG is 3995mm in length, 1870mm in width and 1855mm in height with a wheelbase of 2450mm. The SUV comes with front and rear track of 1580mm, while the ground clearance stands at 232mm. The lifestyle off-roader has an approach, departure and rampover angle of 40 degree, 36 degree and 26.4 degree, respectively. Adding to it, the SUV has a water wading capacity of 650mm. 

Colours

The Mahindra Thar OG is available in 8 exterior colour options, named Artemis Silver, Deep Forest, Battleship Grey, Jeans Blue, Galaxy Grey, Everest White, Stealth Black and Tango Red. 

Competition

The 3-door lifestyle off-roader directly rivals the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the Force Gurkha.
