Vietnamese electric vehicle brand VinFast is preparing to launch its first product in India — the VF 7 electric SUV. After being showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo earlier this year, the VF 7 has now been spotted testing on Indian roads. The VF 7 will be the first VinFast car to go on sale in India, with the smaller VF 6 expected to follow later.
While the original production plan was set for June 30, it has now been delayed by a month due to an incomplete dealership and distribution network. VinFast is now expected to begin production on July 30, 2025. Official bookings for the VF 7 and VF 6 will begin in mid-July, and the company aims to start deliveries across India by mid-August 2025.
VinFast had announced partnerships with dealers in over 40 locations following its debut at the Bharat Mobility Expo. However, only about 8 to 10 dealers remain committed to the brand as others have stepped back due to concerns about the company’s strategy, pricing, and distribution clarity.
Despite being covered in camouflage during its test runs, the VF 7 retains its international design. It sports a wide stance, a V-shaped LED lighting setup with DRLs, and a premium, futuristic grille. The model seen testing in India may come with smaller alloy wheels to suit local driving conditions. The overall length stands at a little over 4.5 metres, putting it squarely in the premium midsize SUV category.
Even with the test mule, key details were visible — including sensors for ADAS features and cameras on the wing mirrors, which indicate a 360-degree camera setup and blind-spot monitoring. The ADAS suite is expected to be a key highlight of the India-spec version. The global variant already comes equipped with advanced driver assistance, all-wheel drive, and connected car technology.
The VF 7 will be offered in Eco and Plus trims. The Eco version features a single electric motor producing around 204 bhp and 310 Nm of torque. The Plus version uses a dual-motor setup for all-wheel drive, delivering a powerful 354 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. Globally, it is paired with a 75.3 kWh battery pack and offers a range of up to 450 km on a single charge (Eco variant).
VinFast plans to assemble the VF 7 at its upcoming EV plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. This factory will serve as a production hub not just for India but for possible exports as well in the future. Despite delays, the brand is moving forward with its India strategy and aims to gain traction in the growing electric SUV segment.
