Nissan Tekton 1.0L Turbo vs 1.3L Turbo: Mileage, Performance, and Maintenance Cost Compared

Nissan entered the highly competitive midsize SUV segment with the Nissan Tekton SUV, which comes with bold Patrol-inspired styling, classing-leading 212mm ground clearance, and a 5-star BNCA crash test safety rating. However, perspective buyers face an important decision right at the dealerships; choosing between the 1.0L Turbo and the 1.3L Direct-Injection Turbo. While both engines share platform architecture, they offer different driving experiences, efficiency and long-term ownership costs.

1. Performance

The 1.0L 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is tuned for low-end torque for linear urban commutes and city efficiency. This engine produces 99 bhp and 166 Nm of torque, and is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The 1.3L T280 GDi 4-cylinder direct-injection turbo-petrol engine that produces 161 bhp and 280 Nm of torque, and is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed wet-clutch DCT automatic with paddle shifters. It is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph in under 10 seconds.

2. Real World Mileage

The lighter 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine has a clear advantage on paper over the 1.3L unit.

1.0L Turbo: it is claimed to deliver an ARAI-certified mileage of 19.4 kmpl. In real-world urban conditions, the SUV could return around 12-14kmpl. On the highways, customers can expect up to 17-18kmpl.

1.3L Turbo: the turbo petrol unit offers an ARAI mileage of 17.8kmpl for the manual and 18.5kmpl for the 6-speed DCT. Renault claims that the DCT offers higher efficiency due to optimised multi-gear mapping and aggressive coasting functions. It is expected to deliver around 10-12kmpl in heavy city traffic, while the efficiency could increase up to 16kmpl on highway cruising.

3. Maintenance & Ownership Costs

Duster 1.0L: this powertrain uses standard port fuel injection and a simpler 3-cylinder layout. It will require synthetic engine oil changes and routine spark plug replacements in the standard maintenance. The Routine annual service costs for the Duster 1.0L are estimated between Rs 5500 - 7000.

Duster 1.3L Turbo: the direct-injection fuel systems require stricter fuel quality standards and occasional cabon-cleaning maintenance. Adding to it, the 6-speed wet-clutch DCT requires specialised transmission fluid, which will be changed at major service intervals. The regular annual service for the Duster 1.3 ranges between Rs 8000 - 10.500.

Which Duster Should You Buy?

If you primarily drive in the city, and prefer a manual gearbox over automatic, the Duster 1.0L is a good option. It comes with lower up-front acquisition costs and offers higher efficiency and lower routine maintenance bills.

For frequent travellers (long highway trips) looking for an automatic (DCT) convenience with paddle shifts, and ready to shed extra for top-tier performance, the Duster 1.3 is the best option.
