Why Mahindra Thar Is A Great 4x4 SUV?

The Mahindra Thar nameplate has been around in the domestic market since 2010 and ever since its launch, it has built for itself a cult fan following because of its road presence and offroad capabilities. In line with the homegrown brand’s new design and engine philosophy of cars, Mahindra updated the Thar SUVs with a range of engine options and features. If you are in the market for a serious off-roader on a budget, the Mahindra Thar is a great choice because of the whole package. Mahindra Thar: Technical Specifications Feature Specifications Engines 1.5L Diesel (1497 cc), 2.0L mStallion Petrol (1997 cc), 2.2L mHawk Diesel (2184 cc) Transmission 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic  Power 116 bhp (Diesel), 150.19 bhp (Petrol), 130.07 bhp (Diesel) Torque 300 Nm (Diesel), 320 Nm (Petrol),  300 Nm (Diesel) Mileage 13 - 15.2 kmpl Dimensions (L x B x H) 3985 mm x 1820 mm x 1855 mm Wheelbase  2450 mm Ground clearance  226 mm Fuel tank capacity 57 litres Price (Ex-showroom) Rs. 11.35 lakh - Rs. 17.60 lakh As you can understand from the above table, the Mahindra Thar is a sub-four metre SUV that has a lot to offer in terms of space, engine and performance. Also, it is the only car in its segment to come with three engine options, catering to a wide range of buyers. Depending on your preference, you can opt either for a petrol or diesel Thar as the engines have nearly identical torque figures. The ex-showroom Delhi prices for the Thar start at Rs. 11.35 lakh and go all the way up to Rs. 17.60 lakh, making it very competitively priced. All in all, the Thar is a great option for anyone who wants an all-rounder vehicle to satisfy his daily running and weekend offroad trips. Mahindra Thar: Exterior On the outside, the Mahindra Thar is unmistakably an off-roader that looks like it can take on some really bad road patches with ease. Design bits on this one are simplistic as has been over the years. It also has to do with the massive 226 millimetres of ground clearance that translates into supreme driving confidence over these terrains. While driving the Thar, you may also notice how the car stands out in terms of road presence.  Being a tall SUV, stepping in and out might need some effort but the after-market accessory world offers great customisation options in terms of side footsteps that you can consider. Currently, the Thar is available in three-door format only but a five-door version is in the works and its launch is close. Exterior colour options range from Stealth Black, Everest White and Desert Fury to Red Rage.  Mahindra Thar: Interior The cabin experience of the Thar feels premium in comparison to its rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha. The interior bits include a touchscreen infotainment system loaded with real-time off-road data for precise driving inputs, a TFT multi-information display, premium HVAC controls, IP54 water resistance and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Mahindra also offers the Blue Sense app for car smartphone connectivity. For safety, the Thar gets 4 stars in Global NCAP, ESP, ABS and dual front airbags. Mahindra Thar: Strong 4x4 Engines The Thar gets three engine options - 1.5-litre diesel, 2-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel. For transmission duties, the Indian car manufacturer has equipped the SUV with a manual and automatic transmission. If you are considering buying the 4x4 Thar, you can buy one in both petrol and diesel. Even the transmission options with the former and latter are varied with automatic and manual.  Talking about the power and torque figures, the smallest of the lot happens to be the 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116 bhp and 300 Nm. The power and torque figures of the 2-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines are 150 bhp, 320 Nm and 130 bhp and 300 Nm respectively.  Also read - Why Thar is So Popular Among Enthusiasts

Mahindra's Next Electric SUV Coming This Financial Year

Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown EV manufacturer is all set to introduce its new age electric SUVs in the Indian market. For people not in the know, Mahindra had revealed 5 concepts - XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE05, BE07 and BE09 - based on the INGLO skateboard architecture. The Mahindra XUV.e8 will be the brand's first born-electric SUV, which is scheduled to be launched before the end of this year. At the time of unveiling, Mahindra said that the XUV.e8 will be introduced by December 2024. However, reports suggest that the launch could shift to the first quarter of 2025 - most probably in January at 2025 Bharat Mobility Show. The electric SUV will directly rival the Tata Harrier EV that is scheduled to be launched sometime in 2025. Mahindra XUV.e8 Size & Battery Pack The Mahindra XUV.e8 styling is very similar to the XUV700 and will be a 3-row electric SUV. Its concept is 45mm longer, 10mm wider and 5mm taller than the XUV700, while the wheelbase is just 7mm longer than the XUV700's. The company has confirmed that the XUV.e8 will come with an all-wheel-drive system. It is most likely to be fitted with a battery pack of up to 80kWh. This system can offer power outputs somewhere between 230hp to 350hp. Mahindra XUV.e8 Interior Patent Images The patent images of the XUV.e8 reveals the dashboard layout, which is dominated by 3 individual screens in a single casing. There is a separate passenger screen, which could be the extension of the existing XUV700 display. The new infotainment screens are likely to run on Mahindra's upgraded Adrenox software. It features a new two-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel with an illuminated logo. The centre console buttons and HVAC controls are likely to be sourced from the XUV700.

Mahindra Thar Armada 5-door - More Features, More Power

Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown UV maker, is all set to introduce the long-awaited 5-door version of the Thar lifestyle SUV by mid-2024. Rumoured to be called the Mahindra Thar Armada, the new SUV will ride on a longer wheelbase and will be loaded with many new features that are not offered in the 3-door sibling.  The 5-door Thar has been spotted numerous times during its test rounds on the Indian roads. The spy images reveal some interesting details about the top changes and what more features are on offer. The current Mahindra Thar sits under 4 meters in length; however, the new Thar Armada is expected to be around 300mm longer. Moreover, the wheelbase is expected to be increased by up to 150mm to create bigger boot and rear passenger doors.  Mahindra Thar Armada - More Features The Mahindra Thar Armada 5-door will have a fixed metallic roof, which allows the automaker to add sunroof. What's interesting is that the SUV could be offered with both single-pane and dual-pane sunroof options. In terms of features, the SUV will have push button start, LED lighting system, front & rear parking sensors, front & rear center armrest, rear AC vents, a larger digital instrument console and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.  Other additions will include rear defogger and wiper, bigger 19-inch wheels, speakers on roof, rear bench seat with 60:40 split folding, 6 airbags, doors mounted window up-down buttons and Auto dimming IRVM.  Mahindra Thar 5-door - Specifications Similar to the 3-door Thar, the 5-door Mahindra Thar Armada will also receive an entry-level 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine. This engine produces 117bhp and 300Nm of torque. It is likely to be offered in 2WD layout, which will position the Mahindra Thar Armada 1.5 against midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.  The SUV will be based on the Scorpio N's architecture. Not just the platform, the new Thar Armada could also source the more powerful engines with the Scorpio. The other engine options could include a 175PS, 2.2L diesel and 203PS, 2.0L turbo petrol. The higher-spec variants will continue to be offered with 4WD layout. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.  It is early to comment whether the new Thar 5-door could receive Frequency Selective Damping as offered in the Scorpio-N. The SUV could also get a 360-degree camera; however, nothing on the same is yet to be revealed. Few spy images reveal that the Thar Armada will get rear disc brakes and Watt's-link type suspension. The SUV might also receive FSD suspension setup, which we have seen on the Scorpio-N.
