Maruti Suzuki is working on multiple new SUVs for the Indian market. The company will introduce an all-new micro SUV, codenamed Maruti Suzuki Y43 to rival the likes of the Hyundai Exter and the Tata Punch. Moreover, the brand will enter the electric vehicle category with the e Vitara. This year, the company will also launch an all-new 7-seater SUV based on the Grand Vitara.
The exact launch details are yet to be revealed, but media reports claim that the Maruti Y43 will go on sale in the 2026-27 period. It will be positioned below the Fronx crossover in MSIL's line-up in India.
The new small SUV will come as an alternative to hatchback buyers. It will mainly target first time car buyers, which are now opting for small SUVs with high ground clearance. The rising demand for small SUVs are evident from the huge success of the Tata Punch, which was the best-selling car in India in 2024.
MSIL hopes that the new 7-seater SUV and the Y43 micro SUV will bring additional sales of 2.5 lakh units per annum. The new model is likely to be sold through NEXA premium dealership network and could replace the Ignis in Maruti's line-up.
The new Y43 micro SUV is likely to be based on Suzuki's HEARTECT platform that underpins the new Dzire and Swift hatchback. Moreover, the new Maruti Suzuki small SUV could get a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, Z-Series petrol engine that produces 82PS and 112Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT.
The new model could also receive Suzuki's new in-house developed hybrid powertrain, which will first debut in Maruti Suzuki Fronx facelift. It will be a series hybrid engine, where petrol engine works as a generator or range extender. The engine produces electricity to power an electric motor that, in turn, drives the wheels.
