Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch its first-ever electric SUV in India, the e-Escudo, also known as the Maruti Electric Escudo or e-Vitara. This mid-size electric SUV is expected to make its official debut on September 3, 2025.
The upcoming e-Escudo is based on the new Heartect-e platform, co-developed with Toyota. This platform is specially made for electric vehicles and is expected to deliver good performance and range. The e-Escudo will be sold through NEXA showrooms across India.
Maruti first showed the e-Vitara concept at EICMA 2024, followed by its India debut at the Auto Expo 2025. However, the brand now appears to be finalizing the e-Escudo name for the market launch.
Recent spy shots of the SUV, taken outside Maruti’s Gurgaon plant, show the car with an ‘e-Escudo’ badge, where the ‘e’ is finished in blue. This confirms that Maruti may have dropped the e-Vitara name in favour of something more global.
Although Escudo is the name used for Vitara in some international markets, the spotted model seems to be India-bound, hinting that Maruti is bringing the Escudo nameplate to India for the first time.
The e-Escudo will carry a bold and adventurous design, based on Suzuki’s “High-Tech & Adventure” styling language. Key design highlights include:
- Y-shaped LED DRLs
- LED tail lamps with a full-width light bar
- Muscular bumper and flared wheel arches
- C-pillar-mounted rear door handles
- 18-inch aero alloy wheels
- Charging port on front fender
Its dimensions are:
- Length: 4,275 mm
- Width: 1,800 mm
- Height: 1,635 mm
Inside, the e-Escudo will get a modern cabin layout with many premium features. Key highlights include:
- 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster
- 360-degree camera
- Wireless phone charger
- Electric parking brake with auto hold
- 10-way power driver’s seat
- Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)
- 7 airbags
- Front and rear parking sensors
- TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)
This will be Maruti’s first model in India to offer ADAS features.
Maruti is likely to offer the e-Escudo with two battery pack options:
49 kWh battery:
- 142 bhp
- 189 Nm
Expected range: Around 400 km
61 kWh battery:
- 172 bhp
- 189 Nm
Expected range: Up to 500 km
The EV will come with a single motor setup initially. Whether Maruti will offer a dual-motor AWD version for India remains unconfirmed.
In 2024, Maruti Suzuki filed trademarks for Escudo and Torqnado. Reports suggest that an ICE-powered SUV based on the e-Escudo’s design may also be in the works, possibly targeting rivals like the Hyundai Creta. This version could feature petrol, hybrid, and CNG powertrains, and will likely be sold through Maruti’s Arena network.
The official launch event is expected on September 3, 2025, as per Maruti’s ‘block your date’ invitation. Prices and variant details will be revealed closer to the date.
With the e-Escudo, Maruti Suzuki is entering the EV space with confidence, aiming to challenge rivals like the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400, and MG ZS EV.
