Tesla has officially confirmed that it is working on a more affordable version of its most popular vehicle, the Model Y. This move comes as the company deals with slowing demand, changing government policies, and rising competition from other electric vehicle (EV) brands.
Currently, the Model Y accounts for nearly two-thirds of Tesla’s global deliveries, making it a key product in the company’s lineup.
While Tesla hasn’t shared full details yet, the budget-friendly Model Y will likely have a lower price tag of around $30,000 or less. To cut costs, the vehicle may come with a smaller battery offering less range and fewer features.
Some premium additions, like active noise cancellation and the rear 8-inch touchscreen, could be removed from this version.
For comparison, the current Model Y Long-Range RWD is priced at $37,490, while the AWD version costs $41,490 — both prices include the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit available in the U.S. until September 30, 2025. Once the credit ends, Tesla vehicles will become more expensive, increasing the appeal of a lower-priced option.
Elon Musk recently stated that Tesla may go through a few rough quarters, leading to a 7% drop in share prices. However, Musk remains optimistic, calling these challenges temporary.
He believes Tesla will bounce back with the help of new revenue sources such as:
- Self-driving technology, currently being tested in Texas with robotaxis
- The upcoming Cybercab
- Humanoid robots, which could revolutionize the tech space
Musk is confident that Tesla’s situation will improve by the second half or end of 2026. Until then, the new affordable Model Y is expected to play a key role in maintaining sales momentum and attracting more customers into the EV fold.
