How the Maruti Escudo Could Eat into Creta’s Dominance in FY26

Maruti Suzuki is all set to introduce a new mid-size SUV called the Victoris (Escudo) in the Indian market. Expected to launch on September 3, 2025, the Escudo could become a strong rival to the current segment leader, the Hyundai Creta, by offering a tech-loaded, value-for-money package.

Maruti Escudo Positioned Between Brezza and Grand Vitara

Maruti Victoris (Escudo) will be a 5-seater mid-size SUV positioned between the Brezza and Grand Vitara in the company’s lineup. While the Grand Vitara is sold via Maruti’s Nexa dealerships, the new Escudo will be available through Arena outlets, making it the most premium SUV ever offered from this network.

Targeting Budget-Friendly SUV Buyers

According to reports, the Escudo will offer more features at a competitive price, targeting buyers who want high-end features without a hefty price tag. This pricing strategy could attract a significant number of customers who currently consider the Creta, Seltos, or Honda Elevate.

Maruti’s First SUV with Level-2 ADAS

The Escudo will become the first Maruti car in India to feature Level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), bringing the brand on par with rivals like the Creta and Seltos. It will also be the first Maruti vehicle to feature Dolby Atmos audio and a powered tailgate, adding to its premium appeal.

Strong Powertrain Options Expected

The Escudo is likely to share its engine options with the Grand Vitara. Expected choices include:

- 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine
- 1.5-litre strong hybrid petrol
- A possible CNG variant
- 4WD option for higher variants

These options could give the Escudo an edge in terms of fuel efficiency, performance, and versatility—key factors for Indian buyers.

Segment on the Rise, Creta Still Leads

The mid-size SUV segment is growing rapidly, with over 6 lakh units sold in FY25, accounting for nearly 26% of total SUV sales in India. The Hyundai Creta led the pack with 1,94,871 units sold, followed by the Grand Vitara at 1,23,946 units and Seltos at 72,618 units.

With the Escudo’s attractive pricing, modern features, and wide dealership reach, Maruti could significantly narrow this sales gap in FY26.

A Timely Launch Amid EV Delays

The launch of the Escudo comes at a time when Maruti's first EV, the e-Vitara, has faced delays due to a shortage of rare earth magnets. With the electric model’s production pushed back, the Victoris (Escudo) could help Maruti maintain momentum in the competitive SUV space.
