New Compact SUVs Coming to India From Mahindra, Hyundai and More
Mahindra, Hyundai, Tata and Kia are preparing new compact SUVs. The next-gen Nexon and Sonet will bring major changes. Petrol, CNG, hybrid and electric options will expand buyer choice.
India’s compact SUV segment is set to become even more competitive, with several new models and next-generation SUVs in the works. Mahindra, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Tata, Kia, Honda, Renault, VinFast and Maruti Suzuki are preparing new products for this space. From the Mahindra Vision S and Hyundai Bayon to the next-generation Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet, these upcoming SUVs will bring new designs, features and powertrain options to Indian buyers.
Here are the key upcoming compact SUVs to watch.
1. Mahindra Vision S
Mahindra is developing the production version of the Vision S, which will sit between the XUV 3XO and Scorpio N in the company’s SUV line-up. The SUV will use Mahindra’s NU_IQ monocoque platform and is expected to feature upright proportions with a rugged design. Powertrain options could include a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine.
2. Hyundai Bayon
Hyundai is preparing the Bayon for India, which will be positioned between the Venue and Creta. The company has already confirmed the Bayon name for its upcoming SUV. The new model is expected to offer more space and a different design compared with the Venue while retaining compact dimensions. It will add another option to Hyundai’s growing SUV portfolio.

3. Volkswagen Tera
Volkswagen is expected to bring the Tera to India sometime next year. The compact SUV will be based on the MQB A0 IN platform and could share several components and features with the Skoda Kylaq. The Tera is likely to use Volkswagen’s 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. Its styling is expected to take inspiration from the brand’s larger SUVs, including the Taigun.
4. Tata Nexon
The next-generation Tata Nexon is also in development and is expected to bring major changes over the current model. The new SUV could get a longer wheelbase and significantly revised styling. Tata is expected to continue offering multiple powertrain choices, including turbo-petrol, CNG and electric versions.
5. Kia Sonet
Kia is working on the next-generation Sonet, with test prototypes already spotted. The new model is expected to move to a new architecture and could be larger than the current SUV. The next Sonet is also likely to get a redesigned cabin and additional safety features. It will continue to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
6. Honda Compact SUV
Honda is expected to launch a new compact SUV around early 2028. The model could share its architecture with the latest Amaze and is likely to initially use a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Honda is also considering a hybrid powertrain for the SUV, which could give it an advantage in terms of fuel efficiency.
7. Renault Bridger
Renault is working on a new compact SUV, reportedly known as the Bridger. The model could arrive around the end of 2027 and may feature a 48V mild-hybrid system. The upcoming SUV will be an important product for Renault as the company looks to strengthen its presence in India’s competitive SUV market.
8. VinFast VF 3
VinFast could also enter the lower end of the compact SUV space with the VF 3. The small electric SUV is already sold in international markets and comes with an 18.6kWh battery pack in its international specification. If launched in India, it could offer a small and relatively affordable electric SUV option to buyers.
9.&10. Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Fronx
Maruti Suzuki is also expected to update its compact SUV line-up. The Brezza is due for an update, while the Fronx could receive a mid-cycle revision. The updates are expected to bring styling and feature changes as Maruti looks to keep both models competitive against newer rivals.
