Maruti Wagon R facelift testing begins Likely to get a 1.2L Z-Series petrol engine with MT and AMT
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been a dominant nameplate in the country's entry-level hatchback segment, consistently topping the chart in the top-selling passenger vehicles list. Known for its practical cabin, and high fuel economy, the popular hatchback is set to undergo a major overhaul with a mid-cycle facelift. Testing of the new model has already been started, suggesting that the hatchback could get significant mechanical upgrades.
The biggest update will come in the form of a new powertrain. MSIL is gradually phasing out its 1.2L 4-cylinder K-Series petrol engine in favor of the new 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine. This engine is currently offered on the Swift, Dzire and Baleno. The new Z12E prioritizes thermal efficiency, volumetric performance, and strict compliance with tightening emission standards.
While the peak horsepower will see a reduction compared to the outgoing 4-cylinder engine, the 3-cylinder engine delivers improved low-end torque for city traffic alongside significantly higher fuel efficiency. The 1.2L 3-cylinder engine is capable of producing 81bhp and 112Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed Auto Gear Shift (AMT).

Maruti Suzuki is likely to address the boot space issue in the CNG version of the WagonR. The hatchback is expected to get an underbody CNG tank, which will liberate a substantial portion of the boot space. This will make it more practical for outstation trips and family luggage.
The hatchback will retain its tall-boy proportions, offering excellent headroom and visibility. However, the Wagon R facelift could receive subtle design and interior changes. It is likely to get a revised front grille with mesh pattern, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and refreshed headlamp/taillamp internals. Inside the cabin, the hatchback is expected to receive new safety features, and a larger 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit.
