The seventh-generation Suzuki WagonR is under development for the Japanese market. The hatchback’s all-new model is reported to share its powertrain with the Solio mini MPV. The latter comes with a 660cc, 3-cylinder, inline petrol engine, delivering a maximum power 54 PS and a peak torque 58 Nm. The electric motor adds an extra 10 PS and 29 Nm. This setup is paired to an electric CVT (continuously variable transmission) gearbox. With the full hybrid powertrain, the new Suzuki WagonR will promise higher fuel efficiency.
Details on the new WagonR are scanty at this point of time. However, the hatchback is likely to come with the sliding rear doors instead of regular ones. It will also offer highly customizable seats. Similar to the current generation, the new one will be 3,395 mm ling, 1,475 mm wide and 1,650 mm tall.
The new Suzuki WagonR strong hybrid is expected to cost around 1.3 million yen (nearly Rs 7.65 lakh) for the base variant and nearly 1.9 million yen (approx. Rs 11.19 lakh) for the top end variant. In India, the WagonR hatchback lineup is currently available within the price range of Rs 5.64 lakh – Rs 7.47 lakh (all, ex-showroom).
In India, Maruti Suzuki will introduce its own strong hybrid powertrain with the Fronx compact crossover this year. Toyota-supplied strong hybrid tech will continue to power Maruti Suzuki’s high-end hybrid models, while the brand’s own strong hybrid system will be used for its small, mass-market offerings. It will be a series hybrid setup, which will be significantly more affordable than Toyota’s hybrid tech.
Maruti’s strong hybrid technology will also be introduced to the Baleno hatchback and Brezza compact SUV with their generation change. The Suzuki Spacia-based mini MPV has also planned for India, which is reported to feature the brand’s own strong hybrid powertrain.
