Maruti Wagon R has been a favourite among Indian buyers for years, known for its spacious design and affordability. But with the automotive world shifting toward electric vehicles (EVs), many are now wondering if Maruti Suzuki is planning to bring an electric version of this iconic car to India. While the idea of a Maruti Wagon R Electric is still up in the air, there are some exciting developments around electric vehicles that could hint at what’s to come.
Let’s take a closer look at whether the Wagon R Electric could be making its way to India soon.
Maruti Suzuki has not officially announced any plans for an electric version of the Wagon R in India just yet. However, there have been talks about Suzuki's Vision e-Sky concept, which could potentially be the basis for a future Maruti Wagon R Electric. This new electric model is designed with city driving in mind, much like the traditional Wagon R, but with the added benefits of being eco-friendly and cost-effective in the long run.

The Suzuki Vision e-Sky is a new compact electric car that Suzuki is showcasing at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. This car shares many design similarities with the Wagon R, especially the tall, boxy look that has become a trademark for this hatchback. The Vision e-Sky is a fully electric vehicle with a range of over 270 km on a single charge, making it a great option for daily commutes and short trips around the city.
While this car is not yet confirmed for India, the Maruti Wagon R Electric could take design inspiration from the Vision e-Sky, especially its compact size and city-friendly features.
If the Maruti Wagon R Electric were to be developed, it could look similar to the Vision e-Sky, with modern features like:
- C-shaped LED DRLs and pixel-style lighting elements for a futuristic look.
- Flush door handles for a sleeker appearance.
- A closed grille, typical for electric cars, as there’s no need for a traditional engine cooling system.
- New alloy wheels and a flat bumper for a cleaner, more streamlined design.
Inside, the Maruti Wagon R Electric could come with a modern touch, featuring dual connected screens, ambient lighting, and wireless charging. These features would offer both convenience and a premium feel to make it a competitive option in the electric hatchback segment.
While the Maruti Wagon R Electric remains speculative, Maruti Suzuki is actively working on electric vehicles. The company is focused on launching the e-Vitara as its first electric vehicle in India. The e-Vitara is expected to be Maruti's entry into the EV market in India, and it’s likely to be the first model to get the green light for a launch.
Currently, there is no official confirmation about the Wagon R Electric hitting the Indian market anytime soon. Maruti Suzuki is likely waiting for the infrastructure for electric vehicles, such as charging stations, to become more widespread before committing to mass-producing electric cars like the Wagon R EV.
At this point, it seems unlikely that the Maruti Wagon R Electric will be launched in India immediately. The company’s focus is currently on launching the e-Vitara EV, which will likely be the first Maruti electric car available in the country.
That said, there is growing interest in electric mobility, and with Maruti Suzuki’s long history of success with the Wagon R, an electric version in the future isn’t entirely out of the question.
