Maruti’s new EV could be priced below Rs. 10 lakh. The electric car may rival the Tata Tiago EV. It could become Maruti’s second EV after the e Vitara.
Maruti Suzuki is preparing to expand its electric vehicle line-up with a new model that could take on the Tata Tiago EV in India. The upcoming electric car is expected to be positioned below the e Vitara and could be priced under Rs. 10 lakh, putting it in one of the most important segments of the Indian EV market.
While the e Vitara marks Maruti’s entry into the electric SUV space, the new model is expected to have a much stronger focus on affordability. It could be aimed at customers looking for their first electric car, particularly those who currently use small hatchbacks or two-wheelers for daily commuting.

Maruti Suzuki has not revealed the name or body style of its upcoming affordable EV yet. However, the positioning suggests that it will be considerably smaller and more accessible than the e Vitara. The company could opt for a small hatchback or compact crossover, with the primary focus being on keeping the purchase price under control. This would allow Maruti to compete in a segment where upfront cost remains a major consideration for customers. A sub-Rs. 10 lakh price point would also give Maruti a product capable of reaching a much wider audience than the e Vitara.
The Tata Tiago EV is currently one of the key models in India's affordable electric car segment. Tata Motors has already established a presence among buyers looking for a relatively low-cost entry into EV ownership. Maruti's arrival could therefore make this segment considerably more competitive. The upcoming Maruti EV is expected to focus less on premium features and outright performance and more on affordability, practicality and low running costs. This approach would fit well with the company's traditional strength in small cars. Hyundai is also preparing a compact EV based on the global Inster, which means Maruti could face competition from both Tata and Hyundai as more manufacturers target the affordable end of the EV market.
Technical details of the new Maruti EV are yet to be announced. The company has not confirmed its battery capacity, power output or driving range. However, the car is likely to be designed primarily for urban use. A relatively small battery pack could help Maruti keep the price competitive while still offering enough range for everyday commuting. A real-world range of around 200-300 km could make sense for such a model, although this is only an expectation and should not be considered confirmed specification.
Battery costs remain one of the biggest challenges when developing an affordable electric car. Maruti Suzuki is therefore expected to place considerable importance on local sourcing. The company is working towards developing a local EV supply chain covering batteries, motors and other electric vehicle components. Greater localisation could help reduce manufacturing costs and eventually allow Maruti to offer its new EV at a more competitive price. This will be particularly important if the company wants to position the model below the Rs. 10 lakh mark.
