
Maruti Baleno tops the chart with over 25,000 units sold in September 2026 SUVs dominated the segment with Nexon, Punch, Fronx, Creta and Scorpio
Despite global uncertainties, the Indian passenger vehicle market presented strong momentum in September 2026. The cumulative sales of the top 10 best-selling cars posted a healthy 15.5% year-on-year (YoY) sales growth. The total sales for the top 10 models stands at 1,91,332 units in Sept 2026, up from 1,65,725 units in the same month last year.
Maruti Suzuki further consolidated its market position by securing six out of the top 10 positions, while Tata Motors is continuously growing with two high volume SUVs in the list.

Maruti Suzuki's six models in the list of top 10 best-selling cars accounted for a combined total of 1,15,573 units. The company is currently holding 60.4% of the entire sales in the list.
The recently launched Maruti Baleno facelift is at the top spot with a staggering 25,392 units. The hatchback reported a YoY sales growth of 93%.
The Two Tata SUVs, the Nexon and Punch, secured the second and third spots. Tata Motors sold 20,456 units of the Nexon and 20,333 units of the Punch in September 2026.
Out of the top ten models, five spots are captured by SUVs and crossovers (Nexon, Punch, Fronx, Creta, and Scorpio).
While SUVs command headlines, the hatchbacks seem in demand again. Three hatchbacks, the Maruti Baleno, Wagon R and Swift, collectively reported a sale of 61,616 units.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx sales surged by up to 40% to claim fourth place with 19,282 units. The Hyundai Creta (17,657 units) and Mahindra Scorpio (17,313 units) are the two other SUVs in the list of top 10 best-selling cars.
The only sedan and MPV in the list belongs to Maruti. Maruti sold a total of 17,754 units of the Dzire and 16911 units of the Ertiga in September 2026.
