Toyota Fortuner, first launched in August 2009, is one of the most popular premium, three-row SUVs in India. This full-sized SUV has always been known for its commanding road presence, off-road capabilities and high resale value. Since its arrival, the Fortuner has witnessed multiple updates including facelifts in 2012, 2015, 2021 and 2023, along with a generational shift in 2016. Now, this premium SUV is all set to enter in its third-generation with comprehensive design and feature upgrades along with a hybrid powertrain.
The biggest change will be made to its powertrain. The new Toyota Fortuner MHEV mild hybrid version, which is already on sale in South Africa, will soon make its way to India. This model features a 2.8L diesel engine paired to a 48V electrical system. It comes with both RWD (rear-wheel drive) and 4X4 drivetrain options, and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The Fortuner MHEV delivers a maximum power of 204PS and 500Nm of torque.
With an idle stop system, it ensures smoother engine restarts and better throttle response. The MHEV setup also gets the downhill assist control feature. Toyota claims that the Fortuner MHEV is 5 percent more fuel efficient than the regular 2.8L diesel-powered version.
Media reports suggest that the new Toyota Fortuner will also be offered with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder petrol engine benefited with the mild hybrid technology. Both these engines are capable of running on fossil fuels as well as carbon-neutral fuels including biofuels (ethanol), synthetic fuels and liquid hydrogen. This 2.0L petrol engine comes in three states of tune – the lowest state for the regular commuting vehicles, mid-level for performance cars and the highest for Toyota’s GR Sport range for motorsports. This gasoline unit in its lowest state delivers a maximum power of 300bhp and 400Nm of torque.
The new Toyota Fortuner will switch to the TNGA-G architecture from the existing IMV platform. Significant changes will also be made to its exterior. The new-generation model is likely to come with a heavily revised front fascia featuring a new grille, redesigned bumper and headlamps with , integrated DRLs. The SUV might also get new dual-tone alloy wheels heavier body cladding, and tweaked rear bumper.
The new-gen Toyota Fortuner is expected to come with the Toyota Safety Suite – ADAS tech. The suite offers features such as lane tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beam, lane departure alert, pre-collision system, road sign assist and proactive driving assist. The SUV could also get a hydraulic steering system instead of the electric power-assisted unit and the vehicle stability control system.
