Tata Motors is getting aggressive with its product strategy for the domestic market. The company has already announced to launch 30 new products, including 7 new nameplates, in the country by 2030. A new media report claims that Tata Motors is developing an all-new sub-4 meter SUV, internally called the Tata Scarlet.
Tata Scarlet compact SUV will be marketed as a lifestyle SUV and its design is inspired by the Sierra SUV. The SUV will have a boxy profile with an upright front fascia. It is expected to be based on a monocoque chassis and will be positioned alongside the Tata Nexon. The Nexon compact SUV will also enter the next generation, which is likely to arrive in 2027.
The mini Sierra is likely to share the engine options with either the Curvv or the Nexon. It could get a 120hp, 1.2L turbo petrol engine or a 125hp, 1.2-litre direct injection turbo petrol engine. It is early to comment whether the Scarlet will get a diesel engine or not.
Tata Motors is also working on a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is likely to debut in the Tata Sierra ICE. It is basically the downsized version of the 1.5L direct injector turbo unit, which will debut on the Harrier and Safari SUVs. Tata could also introduce an electric version of the Scarlet compact SUV.
The Tata Scarlet will be introduced as a lifestyle SUV and is expected to be positioned somewhere between the Nexon and Curvv. The small SUV could be priced around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 17 lakh.
It will come as a more sophisticated alternative to the likes of the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Jimny, though it will be a front-wheel-drive SUV and won’t have AWD or 4WD off-road capabilities.
