Mahindra Thar

Mahindra Thar is a compact four-wheel drive, off-road SUV that is developed by Mahindra & Mahindra in India. Currently in its second generation, the New Thar is a direct descendant of the Willy’s that the company manufactured during the second world war. 

The Thar received a major update in 2022. The update included a completely new design and the addition of a 1.5-liter diesel powertrain option.

Mahindra Thar: Exterior

An iconic SUV, the Mahindra Thar exterior design is an evolution of the original Willys Jeep. The timeless design features a large grille, vertical windscreen, chunky bumper and a large flat bonnet.

On the sides, we get to see the unique two single door design with the large rear quarter glass. In addition, the SUV also offers squared off front wheel archers and black body cladding all around. Towards the rear, the four-wheeler provides a horizontal swiveling tailgate that features retro LED taillamps and a mounted spare wheel.

Mahindra Thar: Interior and Features

Interior: On the inside, the 2023 Mahindra Thar offers a functional interior with a vertical dashboard layout. The all-black cabin is provided with rugged elements like grab handles, floating touch screen and round AC vents.

Features: New Thar gets features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. The vehicle is also equipped with Tyre Direction Monitoring System, center roof lamp, MID display in the instrument cluster, one-touch lane change indicator, and ORVM Adjustment.

Safety: In terms of safety, the Thar gets dual front airbags, ESP with Roll-over Mitigation, ABS with EBD & brake assist, hill descent control, panic braking signal, ISOFIX child seat mounts on rear seats, and more as basic equipment.

Mahindra Thar: Price and Variants

Mahindra Thar price in India starts from Rs 11.25 lakh and extends up to Rs 17.20 lakh (ex-showroom). The model is available in 11 variants namely AX(O) and LX trims with a choice of both manual and automatic transmissions.

Mahindra Thar: Engine and Specification

Mahindra Thar is powered by one petrol and two diesel engine options. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine generates 152 bhp and 320 Nm torque while the 2.2-litre diesel engine delivers 128 bhp with 300 Nm of peak torque. Both powertrain options are mated to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Besides, the smaller diesel unit which is a 1.5-litre engine is capable of pumping out 117 bhp and 300 Nm torque as it is offered only with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The New Thar measures 3,985 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height having a wheelbase of 2,450 mm. The car gets a large 57-litre fuel tank and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Mahindra Thar delivers an ARAI Certified mileage of 15.2 kmpl in petrol and 15.2 kmpl in diesel.
