When we talk about hybrids, two names that instantly come to mind are Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Based on the same platform, the compact SUVs share a lot of similarities. But you may think if they are so similar, how to choose between them? Worry not as we have prepared a detailed blog on how the hybrid cars stack against each other.
As they share the same architecture, commonality is observed in terms of dimensions, interior space and overall driving dynamics. They both offer a comfortable and spacious cabin making them suitable for families and individuals alike. The Maruti Grand Vitara leans towards a more rugged and sporty look, while the Toyota Hyryder maintains a more refined and elegant design. The differences come in the form of grille designs headlights and overall body styling.
Common features between the two cars include touchscreen infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, smartphone connectivity and safety features like ABS, EBD, Hill Descent Control, Emergency Brake Light Flash and six airbags. Other features include a head-up display, ambient lighting, puddle lights, a paddle shifter, ventilated front seats, a leather-wrapped gear knob and a fully digital instrument cluster.
The Global C platform is known for its good handling coupled with comfortable and stable rides, suitable for both city driving and highway cruising. However, there might be slight differences in the tuning of the suspension or steering systems, which could result in slightly different driving experiences. The strong hybrid variants without a doubt have an upper hand in this comparison. Apart from impressive fuel efficiency, they also offer an enjoyable driving experience. The hybrid electric motor's boost adds to the spirited drive, while the paddle shifters are nice as well.
Notably, the 1.5-litre engine's 114bhp may not be the most powerful in its segment but it delivers enough power for an instant punch. With a slightly higher torque of 141Nm compared to its less potent counterpart, the power is accessible right from the get-go. Also, the e-CVT unit is smooth to use.
In the strong hybrid guise, the Toyota-derived powertrain paired with an eCVT unit offers up to 27.97 kilometres per litre. It is claimed to have a maximum mileage of 1,200 km with this setup. This not only makes it a cost-effective option in the long term but also an eco-friendly choice for car buyers. It is worth noting that while the strong hybrid variant offers decent power and torque, it is important to be mindful of throttle use for maximum fuel efficiency. The best part is that the hybrid vehicle can start in EV mode, providing a silent and clean driving experience. With a range of up to 25 kilometres on battery alone, the strong hybrid adds to the overall fuel efficiency.
The mild hybrid model’s driving experience is not tuned to be a powerhouse. Its power output is significantly lower compared to the strong hybrid, but this is because it is tuned for comfort, whether you are driving in the city or on the highway. Compared to other fuel options in the segment, the mild hybrid is extremely practical. I like the ride comfort but a better set of tyres would make the journey even more enjoyable. The stock tyres lack sufficient cornering grip and upgrading to a better set seems essential.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is significantly cheaper at the base price of Rs 12.81 lakh than the Maruti Grand Vitara with a starting price of Rs 13.15 lakh (both ex-showroom). Even the range-topping Toyota model is costlier than its Maruti only by Rs 6,000. But you get an extended warranty of up to 5 years only with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. If you prioritise a longer warranty and a strong hybrid system developed by Toyota, the Hyryder might be the better choice. However, if you are attracted to the slightly sportier styling of the Grand Vitara or prefer the Maruti brand, it would make more sense for you.
