The mass-market EV segment in India is set to witness a major influx of new models over the next 12 to 24 months. While early adoption of the EVs was largely driven by conversions of ICE platforms, the incoming sub-20 lakh electric cars focused heavily on born-electric architectures, new designs and practical cabin.


Here is a look at five highly anticipated EVs under Rs 20 lakh in India.

1. Hyundai Compact EV (Codenamed HE1i)


Positioning: Sub-4 meter Urban SUV
Expected Launch: Late 2026 / Early 2027
Estimated Price: Rs 12 lakh - Rs 16 lakh


What to Expect


The new compact SUV draws inspiration from the global Inster EV; however, it will be longer, wider and taller with more cabin space. The new localized compact SUV will directly rival the Tata Nexon EV, Kia Syros EV and the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV. Built on a modified E-GMP small-car platform, the new Hyundai compact EV will initially source battery cells from Svolt. However, the company is already working with the Exide industries for a locally developed battery pack for the new compact EV.


The electric SUV is expected to be offered with 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery packs. It will come with Hyundai's next-gen Pleos Connect infotainment system, and LEVEL 2 ADAS.


2. Maruti Suzuki YMC Electric MPV


Positioning: 3-row family MPV
Expected Launch: 2027
Estimated Price: Rs 16 lakh - Rs 22 lakh


What to Expect


Maruti Suzuki is preparing a dedicated 7-seater electric MPV, internally codenamed YMC. Testing of the new MPV has already commenced. Sharing its dedicated skateboard platform and battery options with the e Vitara, the Maruti YMC will offer a spacious and practical cabin with flexible seating, and low operating costs for big Indian families. It will come with 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery choices.


3. VinFast VF3


Positioning: Micro Urban SUV
Expected Launch: 2027
Estimated Price: Rs 7 lakh - Rs 12 lakh

VinFast VF3 India


Vietnamese EV maker, VinFast is looking to enter the lower-end of the EV segment with the quirky VF3 micro SUV. Featuring a boxy, two-door layout, the VinFast VF3 offers a minimalist dashboard, sub-3.2-meter length for effortless parking, and an estimated real-world range of around 200 km. It will come as an alternative to the MG Comet EV.


4. VinFast VF5


Positioning: Mass-Market Sub-4m Crossover
Expected Launch: 2027
Estimated Price: Rs 12 lakh - Rs 16 lakh


What to Expect


VinFast VF5 India


The VF5 will be VinFast's mainstream volume player. The traditional 5-door crossover will come with a clean digital cabin setup, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and a digital driver's display. In the global market, the VinFast VF5 SUV is available with a choice of 29.6 kWh and 37.23 kWh battery pack. The crossover is expected to offer a realistic range of over 300km on a single charge.


5. Renault Bridger EV


Positioning: Rugged sub-4m EV
Expected Launch: 2028-29
Estimated Price: Rs 14 lakh - 18 lakh


What to Expect


Renault will introduce the ICE-powered Bridger lifestyle SUV in 2027. The company has confirmed that the Bridger line-up will also feature a dedicated EV-derivative based on the Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP).The Bridger EV will have muscular stance with squared-off front fascia, flared wheel arches, flatter roof and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
