MG Motors India is preparing to launch a wide range of new electric vehicles and hybrid cars in the country. At present, there are two MG electric cars on offer including the MG Comet EV and ZS EV. MG Motor India has announced plans to launch two new electric cars before the end of this financial year.
MG Motor India will introduce an all-new compact electric SUV, which will also mark the brand's first release after the SAIC Motor and JSW Group partnership.
The new electric SUV will be based on the Baojun Yep Plus 5-door electric SUV, which is already on sale in the Chinese market. The new Yep Plus SUV is basically a 5-door version of the Baojun Yep. MG Motor India will market the new EV as a rugged electric SUV.
The new MG electric SUV and the electric MPV will be based on the SAIC's Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform, which is created to develop various small electric cars to cater to different markets.
This is the same architecture that underpins the Comet EV, which is already on sale in the Indian market. It is expected that the Yep Plus will be rebranded as an MG vehicle for the Indian market.

The electric SUV is likely to use the same battery pack as the global-spec Baojun Yep Plus. It features a front-mounted electric motor that outputs 100.5hp and 180Nm of torque, and is paired to a 41.9kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack.
This battery pack is supplied by Guoxuan High-Tech. This electric SUV is claimed to offer the CLTC range of 401km on a single charge. It offers an electronically limited top speed of 150kmph.
Unlike Comet EV, the upcoming MG electric SUV is expected to support fast charging. The battery of the Baojun Yep Plus can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 35 minutes, using a fast DC charging. It also has four driving modes - economy+, economy, standard, and sports.
The new Baojun Yep Plus measures 3996mm in length, 1760mm in width and 1726mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2560mm. The Chinese-spec model has a ground clearance of 150mm, while the curb weight stands at 1325kg.
MG Motor India has announced plans to launch two new electric vehicles in the country before the end of this financial year. MG will introduce the Wuling Cloud EV based e-MPV in our market before the end of 2024.
We expect the new MG electric SUV based on the Baojun Yep Plus will be introduced in our market sometime in the first quarter of 2025.
MG Motor India is targeting a price range of under Rs 20 lakhs for both models. We believe that the new MG electric SUV will sit below the Nexon EV in terms of pricing. It is likely to cost somewhere around Rs 14 lakh to Rs 17 lakh.
