Launched in September 2024, the MG Windsor EV has become a significant player in the Indian EV market. Within the first month of its arrival, the electric MPV emerged as the top-selling EV in the country, registering total sales of 3,116 units. It surpassed its two arch-rivals – Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400. Several factors have contributed to its success. Let’s explore them.
One of the foremost reasons for its popularity is its competitive pricing. The electric MPV is available at a starting price of ₹13.5 lakh, and its top variant costs ₹15.5 lakh (ex-showroom). In comparison, the Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 are priced between ₹12.49 lakh – ₹16.29 lakh and ₹15.49 lakh – ₹17.69 lakh, respectively. The Windsor’s fully-loaded top variant is relatively more affordable than both its rivals.
The “Battery as a Service” (BaaS) rental program makes the MG Windsor EV more affordable and accessible to a wider range of customers. This ownership model is a financing scheme that enables customers to pay for the vehicle upfront or through a loan while paying for the battery on a rental basis. It is supported by four finance companies – Bajaj Finance Limited, Herofin Corp, VidyutTech Services Private Limited, and Ecofy and Autovert Technologies Private Limited. The distance covered by customers each month is calculated using telematics devices installed in the EV. Buyers also have the option to purchase the vehicle as a complete package with prices inclusive of the battery.
The MG Windsor EV is longer, wider, and taller than the Nexon EV and XUV400, ensuring a more spacious cabin. It’s the only vehicle in its segment to offer “aero lounge seats” with 135-degree recline for the rear seats. Unlike its rivals, the Windsor is a born-electric model, allowing maximum utilization of space with a flat floor. There is ample headroom, knee room, and legroom for all occupants, which is significantly better than other cars in the same price range. The seat cushioning further enhances its comfort quotient. For rear-seat passengers, the EV offers an armrest with built-in cup holders and fully adjustable headrests. You also get a reading light in the cabin along with rear door pockets.
Compared to its rivals, the MG Windsor EV offers more features. Right from the base variant, you get access to features such as a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, six speakers, rear AC vents, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, cruise control, manual height adjustment for the driver’s seat, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and more. The standard safety kit includes six airbags, hill-start assist control, hill-descent control, electronic stability program, LED cornering lights, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, rain-sensing wipers, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
The leatherette steering wheel, dashboard, and seats are available from the mid-spec variant. The touchscreen and digital instrument cluster become larger in the mid-level Exclusive trim. It also includes OTA updates, WiFi connectivity, a digital key, Home-to-Car integration via JioFiber, a wireless charger, an auto-dimming IRVM, the MG App Store, and valet mode. While its rivals come with smaller alloy wheels, the Windsor offers 18-inch diamond-cut alloys.
A few features, such as the Infinity 9-speaker audio system, PM2.5 filter, ambient lighting, glass roof, ventilated front seats, and a 7.4kW AC fast charger, are reserved for the top-end Essence trim.
One of its major attractions is the panoramic glass roof, which enhances its premium feel and appeal.
The MG Windsor EV comes equipped with a 38kWh LFP battery with prismatic cells and a front axle-mounted electric motor. The e-motor delivers 136bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. This electric MPV is claimed to offer a range of 331km on a single charge. In comparison, the Tata Nexon EV is available with battery packs ranging from 30kWh to 40.5kWh, offering a range of 275km with the smaller battery pack.
The MG Windsor comes with a lifetime warranty for the battery with unlimited kilometers, applicable only to the first buyers. The carmaker is also offering free public charging for the first year.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 ZX variant is priced at Rs 2.31 crore, while the off-road spec GR-S variant is tagged at Rs 2.41 crore (ex-showroom, India).
