For a very long time, Maruti WagonR has been highly favourite in the domain of city commuters in India. The brand has mastered practicality and affordability together in more than one case. And now, with enhanced hybrid technology, the next-gen version of the Maruti WagonR is likely to come with an outright hybrid option, which is to give this popular hatchback yet better efficiency along with fuel.
The latest reports claim that the next-gen WagonR, which is scheduled for release in Japan, could be housing a 0.66-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine good for 53.26 bhp. This could be mated to an electric motor that churns out 9.86 bhp, making the car a combined 63.12 bhp powerhouse. The hybrid system delivers 58 Nm of torque from the petrol engine and 29.5 Nm from the electric motor. The WagonR full hybrid will come with an electric continuously variable transmission, known to be smooth and efficient. The car will be 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height. The car will have a wheelbase of 2,460 mm and a kerb weight of 850 kg.
There is another form of a hybrid system called a full hybrid system, where two technologies involved are a petrol engine and an electric motor with fuel efficiency and minimization of emissions. Full hybrids will run exclusively on electric power over very short distances and will switch over to electric and petrol power for journeys longer than that. According to sources, this technology is being introduced by Maruti in the next-gen WagonR and thus also makes it the first minicar in Japan with a full hybrid system.
That is the main strength of the WagonR full hybrid: superb fuel efficiency. Although still unknown numbers, it is supposed that the hybrid variant will easily go above 30 km/l compared with the current WagonR CNG variant, which gets 33.47 km/kg. It may make a full hybrid WagonR an attractive customer proposition, especially with fuel prices going up day by day.
So, full hybrids are more expensive than regular petrol cars, and the WagonR full hybrid also follows this trend. Hybrid WagonR in Japan is to be priced as low as 1.3 million yen, which is roughly Rs. 7.22 lakh. Top-of-the-line variants command around 1.9 million yen, which is Rs. 10.55 lakh. This does indeed offer a jump from the current model's price range, but it still falls within what one expects to pay for a full hybrid vehicle.
