India’s electric vehicle (EV) market recently witnessed a sales boost due to the festive season, reversing a decline over the past two months. A total of 217,716 EVs were registered in October, marking the highest monthly sales figure recorded to date. These sales figures are expected to increase multifold as several new electric cars are set to hit the roads in the coming months. India’s top four OEMs—Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Mahindra—will introduce five new EVs in early 2025. Here’s a brief overview of the upcoming EVs:
The Hyundai Creta EV is one of the most anticipated electric car launches of early 2025. It will be the first “high-volume” EV from the South Korean automaker, competing with the Tata Curvv EV, the upcoming Maruti e-Vitara, and Mahindra BE 6e. While the official specifications of the Creta EV remain undisclosed, reports suggest it will feature a 45kWh battery pack and an electric motor. Its power and torque outputs are expected to be 138bhp and 255Nm, respectively.
Spy images reveal that the Hyundai Creta EV will have a dual-screen setup and a dashboard design similar to its ICE counterpart. Its seat upholstery will feature the “CRETA Electric” embossing, along with a new circular three-spoke steering wheel. The electric SUV will receive several EV-specific cosmetic updates, including a closed-off grille, revised front and rear bumpers, and new alloy wheels.
Mahindra & Mahindra recently announced the unveiling of its upcoming XEV 9e and BE 6e electric SUVs, with prices starting at Rs 18.90 lakh and Rs 21.90 lakh, respectively. The full prices of both EVs will be revealed in January at the Bharat Mobility Show, with deliveries expected by the end of February or early March 2025. The powertrain setup for the Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6e includes two battery pack options—a 59kWh and a 79kWh—featuring LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells.
These EVs are based on the modular born-EV INGLO platform and benefit from BYD’s blade cell technology. The BE 6e, with the 79kWh battery, is claimed to offer a range of 628km (ARAI)/550km (WLTP). The larger battery variant of the XEV 9e promises a range of 656km (MIDC) and 533km (WLTP). Both EVs will be equipped with advanced features, including a 1,400W, 16-speaker Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos, Level 2 ADAS, a heads-up display (HUD), seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, and more.
The Maruti e-Vitara will be the first electric offering from the Indo-Japanese automaker in India. It will compete with the MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv EV, and the upcoming Mahindra BE 6e and Hyundai Creta EV. Its market launch is slated for March 2025, with its first public appearance scheduled at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show in January. This electric SUV is designed on an all-new skateboard platform called Heartect-e, which promises “the advanced feel of a BEV and the robust nature of an SUV.” It features eAxles, consisting of the motor and inverter.
The Maruti e-Vitara will be offered with two battery packs—49kWh and 61kWh—utilizing LFP (lithium iron phosphate) blade cells from BYD. The larger battery pack will come with an optional dual-motor AWD system, termed AllGrip-e. While the carmaker has not revealed the range figures yet, the larger battery version is expected to offer a range exceeding 500km.
The Tata Harrier EV is confirmed for launch in the fiscal year 2025. It will be Tata’s answer to the upcoming Mahindra XEV 9e. The electric SUV will be based on Tata's Acti.ev architecture and is expected to feature a 60kWh battery pack, offering an estimated range of around 500km on a single charge. The Harrier EV will come equipped with electric motors mounted on each axle, providing an AWD setup. Tata has confirmed that Acti.ev platform-based EVs will support vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities.
The production version of the Harrier EV is likely to retain most design elements from the concept model, including a closed-off grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers, a coupe-like roofline, and LED taillamps. Interior details are not available at this time, but many features are expected to be carried over from the ICE-powered Harrier.
