In September 2024, Mahindra came very close to overtaking Hyundai in the race for the second-largest car brand in India. Hyundai, which traditionally holds this spot, sold a total of 51,101 cars in the domestic market, only 39 units more than Mahindra’s 51,062. With such a narrow margin, Mahindra is positioning itself to climb further up the ranks, especially with the recent launch of the Thar Roxx, bookings of which start on October 3.
Hyundai saw a 10% year-over-year (YoY) decline in overall sales compared to September 2023. Their domestic sales fell by 6%, while exports took a sharper hit, falling by 25%. Despite this, Hyundai’s SUV segment led by the Creta continues to drive a large portion of its sales, accounting for 70% of its overall figures. Given that the festive season is here, Hyundai remains optimistic with new models ready to attract customers.
Mahindra, on the other hand, is experiencing a strong momentum in the market. The SUV maker’s growing appeal, bolstered by successful models like the Scorpio N, XUV700 and now the Thar Roxx, is helping it close in on Hyundai. If the trend continues, Mahindra could soon overtake Hyundai to become the second-largest car manufacturer in the country.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors slipped to the fourth position with 41,063 units sold, including electric vehicles, last month, making Mahindra’s achievement even more significant.
Considering the rollout of fresh discounts and offers, the competition among these top brands is set to intensify, with Mahindra inching closer to its goal of ranking higher in the Indian automobile market.
