Indian passenger new car segment has just witnessed a huge uproar in sales over the last 80 days owing to the festive season. According to a report, the country’s automotive segment sold over 11.4 lakh units to generate a total revenue of Rs 1.3 lakh crore at an average ticket size of Rs 11.5 lakh. These numbers came as a sigh of relief for the segment that was plagued with semiconductor shortages and long lead times for over two years.
SUVs were the order of the day with Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Mahindra controlling the top spots. In this story, we shall look at OEM-wise sales records for the month of October 2023 and also analyse the top-selling models for each brand.

Once again Maruti Suzuki claimed the top spot on the sales chart. The homegrown automaker produced and sold a total of 1.68 lakh units in October 2023. Compared to 2022 figures the brand witnessed a 19 percent increase thanks to the introduction of new models like the Maruti Suzuki Invicto, Fronx and Jimny.
Among the many segments that Maruti Suzuki cars operates, the compact vehicle segment continues to be the volume driver with a total sales of 80,662 units. This segment includes models like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and the Maruti WagonR.
The compact vehicles were closely followed by the SUV and MPV segment which accounted for 35 percent of the total sales. Among these, Maruti Suzuki Brezza led the way with 16,050 units, trailed by Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Grand Vitara with 11,357 and 10,834 units respectively. Second best for the month of October was Hyundai Motor India Limited. With total sales of 55,128 units the company witnessed 14.84 percentage. Unlike Maruti Suzuki which depends on its mini/compact models for numbers, SUV segment is Hyundai’s best seller.
Due for a major update in 2024, the Hyundai Creta takes the top spot with 13,077 units sold which is 10 percent more than the figures from 2022. Next best seller for the brand was the Venue which sold 11,581 units to retain third spot in the sub-compact SUV segment behind the Tata Nexon and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
Other popular models from the brand includes the all-new Exter SUV, i20 and the Grand i10 NIOS hatchback.

Next OEM on the list is Tata Motors which sold over 48,637 units throughout the month. The company witnessed two massive launches in the Tata Safari and Harrier Facelift which are key to it becoming the second largest OEM in the country soon.
Tata Nexon remained the top-selling model for the company and the best seller in the sub-compact SUV segment with a 16,887 units sold. The facelift and the flexibility with multiple powertrain options majorly helped the Nexon maintain its position as the leader and Tata expects sales to steadily increase for the model in the coming months. Despite stiff competition from Hyundai Exter, the Punch managed a 39 percent increase in sales to 15,317 units becoming the second best-selling model for the company.
