Fuel economy has always been a major point of consideration for new car buyers in India. This phenomenon has become more evident in recent times, due to the high fuel costs. Trying to ease the nightmare of SUV customers, here is a list of ‘Top 5 Most Fuel-Efficient SUVs” (petrol) in India.
The recently revealed Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara has become the most fuel-efficient SUV in the Indian market. The company claims a fuel efficiency figure of 27.97 kmpl for the vehicle with Maruti Suzuki Intelligent Hybrid System. The SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine paired to an electric motor producing a combined power output of 115bhp. The electric motor makes use of the 177.6 V lithium-ion battery pack and is mated to an e-CVT gearbox. This self-charging strong hybrid powertrain lets the four-wheeler run on EV-only mode and also assists the engine during acceleration, which results in lesser fuel consumption.

We expect the Grand Vitara’s cousin, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder to deliver similar fuel efficiency figures, as both SUVs are based on the same platform and utilise the same powertrain components.

Next up is another Maruti Suzuki car. This time it’s the All-New Brezza that helps the company dominate the fuel economy department. The updated SUV delivers a claimed fuel economy of 20.15 kmpl through its 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine. This system is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and gets progressive Smart Hybrid System with ISG and ISS that offer Torque Assist and Brake Energy Regeneration.

The Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq deliver a similar claimed fuel efficiency figure of 19.20 kmpl. The German twins are built on the MQB-A0-IN platform and share their powertrain components. These vehicles come powered by the 1.0 litre 3-cylinder TSI motor mated to a 6-speed manual transmission producing 115 bhp and 178 Nm of torque.

The design and overall package of the Kia Sonet makes it a no-brainer to buy. The deal is made even sweeter with its impressive fuel economy figures. It comes equipped with a 1.2-litre Advanced Smart Stream Petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. This setup combined with the light body weight of the SUV helps it to deliver 18.4 kmpl of mileage.

The Hyundai Venue is not far behind its Korean sibling in terms of fuel efficiency. The recent update to the SUV and its 1.0-litre 3 cylinder tGDi engine mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox helps the vehicle achieve a claimed fuel efficiency of 18.1 kmpl.
