Recently, the "Dark Edition" or "Black Edition" version of vehicles in India has witnessed a clear rise in popularity. Dark- and black-coloured vehicles with special models generally unveil the exclusive fashion-based appeal to the otherwise normal versions. Almost all auto manufacturers are catching up on this bandwagon as they are releasing special versions of their performance vehicles with sporty and handsome looks. Let us explore the causes of this emerging trend and discuss why car manufacturers are launching these black-edition vehicles in India.
Dark or Black Editions are coming very commonly in the Indian automobile market. These editions come with full-black bodywork, interior, and other design components that are attention-grabbers. The sporty, aggressive design of these vehicles is attractive to a niche customer looking for something new in the range of colors that they are offered. Even mainstream manufacturers like Toyota, MG, Mahindra, Tata, and even premium players like Rolls-Royce are following suit, and the Dark Edition is part of their standard product portfolio.
One of the primary reasons for the popularity of dark-coloured cars is their visual appeal. The colour black is inherently linked with power, sophistication, and elegance. It makes cars look bold, aggressive, and contemporary, attracting more customers who are seeking something different. The dark colours also possess a retro appeal, typically regarded as stylish and sleek. It has created growing demand for the black models, particularly among young customers and fashion-conscious buyers.
A number of car manufacturers have followed the dark edition trend, with some of the models turning out quite popular in India.
Toyota Hilux Black Edition
Toyota has also launched the Hilux Black Edition at Rs. 37.90 lakh (ex-showroom) recently. It gets a black theme throughout the car, which makes the car look aggressive and sporty. Nothing has been changed in the powertrain, though. The booking of the Black Edition of Hilux has also begun, and it will be available for delivery in March 2025.
MG Astor Blackstorm Edition
The MG Astor Blackstorm Edition, which was released in 2024, has been a hit with Indian SUV enthusiasts. It comes with a price tag of Rs. 13.45 lakh (ex-showroom) and gets a number of cosmetic upgrades like an all-black honeycomb grille, black headlamps, and black cladding. The variant also gets red brake calipers, a Sangria Red-inspired interior, and higher-end features like JBL speakers and Level 2 ADAS. The variant has been successful with its design and tech combination.
Mahindra Scorpio N Black Edition
Mahindra is launching an all-new Black Edition of its best-selling car, the Scorpio N. The Scorpio is a best-seller among Indian customers, and the Black Edition will have that extra something with its blacked-out interior and body. Even though Mahindra has some of the black color options in their lower models at the moment, the Black Edition will provide it with that something extra.
Rolls-Royce Spectre Black Badge
Even premium brands such as Rolls-Royce are venturing into the black edition space. The Rolls-Royce Spectre Black Badge is a pure electric performance fastback coupe with commanding exterior hues and better performance. The car also has an extra 82bhp of power and 0-100 km/h of speed in just 4.1 seconds, which indicates that black editions are not merely aesthetic but also refer to performance.
Tata Motors Dark Editions
Another prominent player in the dark edition segment is Tata Motors, which has several dark-themed vehicles. Tata Nexon, Harrier, Safari, and Curvv are some of the vehicles included in Dark Edition. Nexon CNG Dark Edition, priced at Rs. 12.70 lakh (ex-showroom), is another vehicle Tata has added to its lineup, providing a mix of style and fuel efficiency. The Tata Harrier and Safari Dark Editions are design-exclusive and fashionable, and the Curvv Dark Edition, which is a recent future model, will be available soon.
Citroen Basalt Dark Edition
Citroen also jumped on the dark edition bandwagon with its soon-to-be-released Basalt Dark Edition. As much of a secret as it is, the teaser indicates that the vehicle will have a dark interior and dark exterior appearance, taking it one step further in toeing the line of all-black automobile design in the market.
Indian buyers are becoming more discerning in their tastes. As more people need specially made, exclusive products, Dark Editions are a solution to fit the bill. Not only is the black-themed design popular on cars, but also it is a wish for cars that portray status, power, and sleekness. Dark Editions enable buyers to have a car that is distinct from the common models on sale.
Also, as there is increasing demand for luxury vehicles and automobiles in India, companies are rolling out Dark Editions for those who want something unique in features and looks. The new editions tend to have extra features, providing people with an upgraded version of their automobiles, thus making them more desirable to purchase.
Dark Editions in the development of India indicate the direction of change in customers' preferences towards advanced, powerful, and premium vehicles. Car manufacturers are capitalizing on this by launching special editions of their best-selling models with hot black looks and special accessories. From Toyota and MG to Tata and Rolls-Royce, a number of companies are now launching Black Editions as consumers increasingly become interested in customized, high-end cars. Now with other car producers following suit, there is little doubt that Dark Editions are here to stay, providing an aggressive and alternative take on the regular car models available in the market.
