The Indian auto market is shifting toward eco-friendly options, with Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors set to launch four new CNG cars. These include the Tata Nexon, Tata Curvv, new Maruti Suzuki Swift, and New-Gen Maruti Suzuki Dzire. These cars promise better fuel efficiency and lower emissions for environmentally conscious buyers.
Let’s have an overview of the upcoming CNG cars:
Tata Motors is planning to launch the CNG-powered Nexon by September 2024. It will be the first CNG car in India offered with a turbocharged petrol engine. It will come with the 1.2-litre turbocharged unit as its petrol counterparts. This can produce a maximum power of 118 bhp and 170 Nm of torque. For the Nexon CNG, the power and torque figures are yet to be revealed.
Not only this, Tata might also offer an AMT option on the Nexon CNG range. After the Tiago and Tigor, the Tata Nexon will be Tata's third vehicle to be available with a CNG-AMT gearbox combination.
Besides Nexon CNG, Tata will also introduce the twin-cylinder CNG tech in its recently launched Curvv. This SUV coupe is based on Tata's new ATLAS platform which can accommodate multiple powertrains including petrol, diesel, and CNG.
Currently, the Curvv is available with three engine choices; 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol, 1.5-litre Kryotec diesel, and a 1.2-litre direct engine turbo petrol. It is believed that Tata might use the same CNG powertrain option that will be offered in the Nexon CNG variant. It is expected to get a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with a twin cylinder technology. The CNG-powered Curvv is likely to come in the last quarter of the financial year.

Maruti Suzuki launched its new-generation Swift a few months ago at Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Unlike its previous-generation Swift (which had a CNG option), the new Swift arrived with a petrol engine only.
However, Maruti is currently working on the CNG variant of the 2024 Swift model which is likely to launch soon in the market. The Swift CNG will continue to be powered by the same 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. It can be paired to a 5-speed manual transmission only.
Maruti is expected to use the same strategy for the new-gen Dzire as it has planned for the new-gen Swift. The upcoming Dzire will use the same Z-Series engine as the 2024 Swift.
Since the current Dzire model is available with a CNG option, we can expect the brand to offer CNG in the new-gen model as well. It will use the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine which can produce 82 bhp and 108 Nm of torque. With the CNG powertrain, the power torque figures will slightly be lower. As for the transmission, it can be available with a 5-speed manual as standard and an automatic gearbox as optional.
