Renault Duster to Get More Affordable 1.3L Turbo Petrol Engine

Renault Duster to get a new 1.3L MPFi turbo engine. New engine variants could be Rs 1.5 lakh cheaper.

Renault India is working on a new 1.3-litre MPFi (Multi-Point Fuel Injection) turbocharged petrol engine for the Duster SUV. It will be exclusively offered on the lower variants and serve as an affordable alternative to the currently available TGDi (Turbocharged Direct Gasoline Injection) engine. However, the exact power and torque figures of the new MPFi petrol engine have yet to be revealed.

As far as pricing is concerned, the new Renault Duster 1.3-litre MPFi variants are expected to be nearly Rs 1 lakh – Rs 1.5 lakh more affordable than their TGDi-powered counterparts. The existing 1.3L turbo petrol variants are currently priced between Rs 12.99 lakh – Rs 18.69 lakh (Iconic Launch Edition).

Existing Engine Options

The Renault Duster SUV lineup is currently available with two turbo petrol engine options – a 1.0-litre producing 100bhp with 160Nm and a 1.3-litre generating 163bhp with 280Nm. Both engines come with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Renault Duster Hybrid

The carmaker recently added a new 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain to the Duster lineup. Called ‘E-Tech 160’ system, the strong hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery pack. The setup delivers a combined power of 110bhp and 175Nm of torque. Transmission duties are performed by a ‘multi-mode automatic’ gearbox. The unit has two electric gears and four petrol gears.

Renault claims that the Duster hybrid can cover up to 80 percent in pure electric mode. It accelerates 0 to 100kmph in 9.61 seconds, making it the fastest hybrid car in the segment. The SUV offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 29kmpl. It’s arch rivals, the Maruti Grand Vitara, Maruti Victoris and Toyota Hyryder offer claimed fuel economy of 27.97kmpl. 28.65kmpl and 27.97kmpl, respectively. The Duster hybrid also comes equipped with frequency-dependent dampers at the front and rear along four-wheel disc brakes.
