Mahindra becomes India’s second-largest carmaker in CY2025. SUVs like Scorpio, Thar and 3XO drive strong year-long demand. New electric SUVs add fresh momentum to Mahindra’s growth.
Mahindra has achieved a major milestone by moving up to the No. 2 position in India’s passenger vehicle market in CY2025, according to Vahan data available till December 25. This is the first time Mahindra has ended a year ahead of both Hyundai and Tata Motors. Maruti Suzuki continues to lead the market with total registrations of around 17.50 lakh units.

Mahindra recorded around 5.81 lakh vehicle registrations in 2025, up from 4.90 lakh units in 2024. This strong growth has helped the brand climb from fourth place last year to second place this year, making it the biggest mover among all carmakers.
Sales between January and November 2025 stood at 5,74,657 units, reflecting an 18 percent year-on-year growth during the period.
Tata is expected to finish third with 5.52 lakh units, just ahead of Hyundai at 5.50 lakh units. This marks a significant shift in the market, as Hyundai has dropped to fourth position after holding the No. 2 spot for several years.
Mahindra’s strong performance is closely linked to its SUV-heavy product lineup. With models like the Scorpio, Thar, Bolero, 3XO and XUV700, the brand has benefited from India’s growing preference for SUVs.
Demand has remained steady throughout the year, especially in semi-urban and rural markets, where long-running models like the Bolero and Scorpio continue to perform well.
The Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic remain Mahindra’s top-selling models with 1,61,103 units, accounting for 28 percent of total sales.
The Thar brand has seen the fastest growth. Combined sales of the Thar and Thar Roxx touched 1,07,326 units, registering a massive 55 percent year-on-year jump. The five-door Thar Roxx is estimated to contribute nearly two-thirds of these volumes.
The Mahindra 3XO compact SUV recorded 90,608 units, growing 12 percent YoY, and now contributes close to 16 percent of overall sales.
The XUV700 sold 80,251 units in the same period. While it saw a slight decline year-on-year, it continues to hold a strong 14 percent share in Mahindra’s portfolio.
Mahindra’s electric push has also started showing results. The BE 6, XEV 9e and XEV9s together contributed 38,841 units, making up around 7 percent of the company’s total volumes in 2025.
With rising SUV demand, consistent volumes across segments, and growing EV sales, Mahindra’s focused strategy has paid off. Finishing second in India’s PV market in 2025 highlights how well the brand has aligned itself with changing buyer preferences and sets the stage for continued momentum in the coming years.
