Mahindra has ushered production of the upcoming Thar five-door, which could be called Thar Armada upon launch. Reportedly, Mahindra will launch its highly anticipated SUV on August 15, as has been the norm in recent years. Manufacturing at full force at the Chakan facility, Autocar reported.
Initially, 2,500 units were to be rolled out but it has been doubled to up to 6,000 cars. If executed, Mahindra will be producing over 70,000 Thar five-door SUVs annually. With the Thar three-door on sale, its bigger sibling will aim to fill the void of lack of space, creating a segment of its own.
Longer by 300 millimetres, it should be as long as the Hyundai Creta. Reportedly, it will be offered with a variety of powertrains, ranging from a 1.5-litre diesel (RWD), 2-litre turbo petrol to a 2.2-litre diesel mill shared with the Scorpio N (130 bhp/ 300 Nm). Both 4x4 and 4x2 will be offered. Each motor is to be paired with an automatic transmission. Mahindra’s stable is filled with SUVs like the 3XO and XUV 700 which can be bought with either a petrol or diesel mill.
Notable features to come with the SUV are a sunroof, Level 2 ADAS, bigger infotainment screens than the three-door, a front centre armrest and sunglass holder. Other features include new LED headlamps and alloy wheel design. We expect Mahindra to price the four-wheeler at a starting price of Rs. 15 lakh, ex-showroom.
