It is no secret that Toyota is developing an all-new 3-row SUV, which will be positioned below the Fortuner in the brand's line-up. The new SUV will be revealed by November and will support electrification. New media reports reveal that the new Toyota SUV will be designed to meet the strictest anti-pollution regulations.
The new Toyota 3-row SUV will come equipped with the same micro-hybrid system, which is available in the Hilux in some international markets. The engine setup consists of a 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine coupled to a belt-driven electric motor/generator, a small lithium battery and a convertor.
Toyota claims that the Hilux with diesel hybrid setup offers an improved efficiency of up to 10 percent. Adding to it, the hybrid setup also helps in reducing NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels. This engine is capable of producing 204bhp of power and 499Nm of torque.
Likely to be called the new 'Land Cruiser FJ', the new 3-row SUV will also have a petrol derivative. It could get a 2.7-litre petrol engine that produces 66bhp. Adding to it, the SUV could also receive an electric derivative in near future. It will have an automatic gearbox and 4x4 drivetrain with different modes. The SUV is rumoured to measure around 4.5 meters in length with a wheelbase of around 2,750mm.
The styling of the new Toyota's Land Cruiser FJ was first previewed as the Compact Cruiser EV concept. It will have a squared body with straight lines and squared-off wheel arches. The SUV's production will start in November in Thailand. Not just in Asia, the new 3-row SUV is also expected to be launched in Europe, South American and the Middle East.
The FJ Cruiser will be introduced in markets where Corolla Cross are not on sale. While the Corolla Cross is based on the front-wheel-drive monocoque platform, the 3-row SUV will be built on a body-on-frame chassis.
