The all-new Tata Sierra 2025 has already captured attention with its recent launch, priced at Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Now, Tata Motors has confirmed an exciting update that its all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant is on the way. Expected to arrive by early 2027, the Sierra AWD will boost the SUV’s off-road capabilities
Let’s dive into what we can expect from the upcoming Tata Sierra AWD.

Tata Sierra AWD will first make its debut with the electric version, expected in 2026. This AWD electric variant will come equipped with a dual-motor configuration similar to the Harrier EV, offering better traction and improved off-road capability. Following the EV, the ICE AWD model will be launched within the next 12-18 months.
Tata Sierra is powered by the ARGOS platform, which stands for All-terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, Geometry Scalable Architecture. This flexible platform supports a variety of body styles, powertrains (including petrol, diesel, CNG, and hybrid), and vehicle lengths. While the Sierra comes standard with front-wheel drive (FWD), the ARGOS platform makes it possible to introduce AWD for both the ICE and EV versions, giving Tata Motors the freedom to offer a wide range of configurations.

Tata Sierra EV AWD will be available in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) formats when it launches in 2026. As for the ICE AWD version, this will mark Tata’s return to ICE 4x4 SUVs - the first time since the Hexa was launched back in 2020. Previous models like the Harrier and Safari couldn’t offer AWD without significant reengineering. However, with the ARGOS platform, the Sierra AWD becomes a reality, giving Tata a competitive advantage in the SUV market.
AWD vehicles have been steadily gaining popularity in India, with many buyers looking for better traction and off-road capability. The Harrier EV AWD, for example, already accounts for 35% of its sales, surpassing Tata's expectations. According to Vivek Srivatsa, Tata’s Chief Commercial Officer, the AWD variant aligns perfectly with Tata’s SUV legacy, and the Sierra is the ideal model to bring 4x4 capability back to the brand’s offerings.
Tata Sierra comes with three engine options - a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbo petrol, and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel. These engines will come in front-wheel-drive (FWD) configurations. Although Tata has not yet revealed which specific engine and gearbox combinations will get the AWD option, it is expected that the introduction of AWD will expand the Sierra’s appeal, particularly for customers looking for a more versatile, performance-oriented SUV.
The booking for the 2025 Tata Sierra will open on December 16, offering buyers a range of exciting variants and options. Tata Motors is expected to announce the full price list and configurations in the coming months, with deliveries set to begin by mid-January 2026.
