Tata Motors has started using a new name for its all-wheel drive (AWD) system – it’s called QWD (Quad Wheel Drive). This new badge was first seen on the Harrier EV, and now, it could be used on more Tata SUVs in the future. The next one to get it might be the upcoming Tata Sierra EV.
QWD stands for Quad Wheel Drive, Tata’s branded version of an electric AWD system. It uses dual electric motors — one on the front axle and another on the rear — to deliver power to all four wheels. This results in delivering better traction, improved acceleration, and powerful off-road capabilities.
Tata says QWD is engineered for Indian driving conditions as it offers a perfect balance between rugged off-road strength and smooth highway performance. It allows precise torque distribution between front and rear axles, simulating a 4WD experience in an electric SUV.
The Sierra EV is expected to share its platform and powertrain with the Harrier EV. It could be offered in two battery configurations:
- 65kWh battery with rear-wheel drive (RWD)
- 75kWh battery with QWD dual-motor AWD setup
In the QWD variant, the front motor may produce 156bhp while the rear motor could deliver 235bhp, with a combined torque output of up to 504Nm.
In addition to the EV, Tata will also launch internal combustion engine (ICE) versions of the Sierra. These are expected to include:
- A 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine (167bhp / 280Nm) with 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT options
- Diesel options could include either a 2.0L turbo or a 1.5L unit, with both manual and automatic transmissions
While Tata Motors hasn’t revealed the exact launch date, the Sierra lineup — including both EV and ICE models — is expected to hit the market in early 2026.
