Despite push for greener vehicles and stricter emission norms, diesel vehicles continue to enjoy strong demand in the Indian market. Most OEMs are scrapping their diesel lineup, but a few manufacturers are still betting on diesel powertrains and introducing new models. Here, we bring you key details of the top five upcoming diesel cars and SUVs, which are set to hit roads soon.
The Kia Carens compact MPV from the South Korean automaker is ready to receive its first midlife update in coming months (possibly by August, 2025). Noticeable changes will be made to its exterior and interior, while the engine setup is likely to remain intact. This means the 2025 Kia Carens facelift will come with the 1.5L diesel, 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5L turbo petrol engine options. The MPV’s diesel motor produces a maximum power of 116PS and 250Nm of torque.
Fresh spy images confirm that the updated Carens will come with a panoramic sunroof. Safety features such as a 360 degree camera and ADAS could also be on offer. The updated version might share the 30-inch Trinity panoramic display with the Syros. The new Carens will derive some of its design elements from the EV5 including the triangular-shaped headlamps with starmap LED elements. It might also get new alloy wheels, revised rear bumper and vertically placed taillamps connected through LED strip.
We saw the production-ready Tata Sierra last month at this year’s Bharat Mobility Show. The carmaker has confirmed that the SUV will be introduced with ICE and electric powertrains in the second half of 2025. The ICE-powered version is likely to come with the 1.5L turbo petrol and 2.0L diesel engines, pushing out power worth 170bhp with a peak torque of 280Nm and 350Nm, respectively. The ICE-powered Sierra could also be offered with the AWD (all-wheel drive) system. The Tata Sierra EV is expected to be offered with multiple battery packs ranging between 60kWh – 80kWh. Its range is likely to be over 500km.
The final version of the Sierra has retained most of design elements from the concept. Measuring around 4.3 metres in length, the SUV will feature split headlamp setup, pronounced bonnet, 19-inch alloy wheels, signature curved-over rear windows and taillamps connected via LED strip. The Tata Sierra will have a floating triple screen setup, ambient lighting system, four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo and more.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will arrive in India towards the end of 2025. In TMK (Toyota Kirloskar Motor) product lineup, this full-size SUV will sit below the Land Cruiser LC300 and come as a CBU unit with an estimated price range of Rs 1.7 crore – Rs 1.95 crore. In global markets, the Land Cruiser Prado is offered with a 2.8L diesel engine boosted with a 48V mild hybrid system. Paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, this motor pushes out a maximum power of 204bhp and 500Nm of torque.
The SUV has sporty all-black interior with a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, a new steering wheel with the ‘TOYOTA’ lettering, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a wireless charging pad, AC vents for second and third row seats and several advanced features. Some of its design highlights include the signature grille with vertical slats, square LED headlamps, 20-inch black alloy wheels, a sunroof and rain sensing wipers and side setps.
Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to give a midlife update to its highly popular XUV700 SUV this year. The SUV’s updated model is likely to receive significant changes inside and out, while the engine setup will remain intact. Currently, it’s available with the 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol and 2.2L mHawk turbo diesel engines, and two gearbox options – manual and automatic. The petrol motor delivers a claimed power of 200bhp with 380Nm, while the diesel unit offers 115bhp with 360Nm in lower state and 185bhp with 420Nm in higher state.
Talking about upgrades, the 2025 Mahindra XUV700 facelift is likely to borrow some of its design elements and features from the XEV 9e. The facelifted version could get a triple screen layout (one for the infotainment system, one for the front passenger and one for digital instrumentation), a two-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls, an AR-based HUD, auto park assist, a 16-speaker sound system, NFC car unlocking, a dual wireless phone charger and a built-in selfie camera.
The indigenous automaker will also update the Scorpio N and Thar SUVs this year. The 2025 Mahindra Scorpio N will continue to use the 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L diesel engines, which are good enough for 203bhp with 370NM/380Nm and 132bhp with 300Nm/400Nm, respectively. The SUV might also get a larger 10.25-inch infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and an upgraded Level 2 ADAS suite. The lower trims might receive features such as ventilated seats and a 360 degree camera.
The 2025 Mahindra Thar facelift will also retain the existing 1.5L diesel, 2.0L diesel and 2.2L diesel engines. The SUV’s 3-door version might derive a few design elements from its 5-door counterpart. However, major changes will be made inside the cabin. To enhance its value proposition, Mahindra might equip the updated Thar with the bigger digital driver’s display and touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charger and ventilated front seats. All variants could also get 6 airbags as standard safety feature. The SUV’s higher trim is likely to receive Level 2 ADAS suite and a 360 degree camera.
