Kia India has entered the premium three-row SUV segment with the launch of the Kia Sorento. Locally assembled at Kia’s Anantapur facility, the Sorento enters a highly competitive 7-seater SUV space currently dominated by the Toyota Fortuner.

Dimensions and Platform


The Kia Sorento is built on Kia’s global N3 platform, which focuses on urban comfort, dynamic handling and structural safety. On the other hand, the Fortuner is based on a traditional body-on-frame ladder-chassis architecture which favours extreme off-road durability.


Kia Sorento: it measures 4,815 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,785 mm in height (with roof rails), with a 2,815 mm wheelbase. The Sorento offers a ground clearance of 176mm.


Toyota Fortuner: the 7-seater rugged SUV measures 4,795 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,835 mm in height, with a 2,745 mm wheelbase. It has a ground clearance of 225mm.


The Sorento is longer and wider with a longer wheelbase that translates to improved cabin space across its 6-and 7-seater configurations.


Powertrain Options & Performance


The Kia Sorento is available with two engine options - a 1.6-litre turbo GDI hybrid and a 2.2L turbo diesel. The hybrid setup comprising a 1.6-litre turbo GDI engine that produces 180 PS and 265 Nm, and its electric motor adds another 65 PS and 264 Nm. Paired with a 6-speed AT, the Sorento brings in the segment-first Hybrid AWD.


The 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo diesel engine that produces 193 PS and a peak torque of 442 Nm, and is paired to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It is offered with both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options.


The Toyota Fortuner is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a mild hybrid setup. This engine produces 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque, and is paired with a 6-speed AT with 4-wheel-drive option. Toyota is also offering the same powertrain without mild-hybrid setup, which is offered with both 6-speed manual and  automatic gearbox options.


The Fortuner is also offered with a 2.7-litre petrol engine that produces 164 bhp and 245 Nm of torque. This powertrain is offered with an automatic gearbox and rear-wheel drive setup.

The Sorento Turbo GDI hybrid focuses on fuel efficiency and smooth delivery. It is also the first in its category to pair a hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive (AWD), offering dedicated Snow, Sand and Mud terrain modes. Safety and Driver Assistance


Kia Sorento: it is equipped with LEVEL 2+ ADAS with 30 autonomous functions, including highway driving assist, forward collision avoidance, smart cruise control with stop & go, and remote start parking. It also gets 10 airbags on top-tier variants along with 26 safety features as standard.


Toyota Fortuner: the body-on-frame SUV gets 7 standard airbags, vehicle stability control, hill-assist control, ABS with EBD, and a 360-degree surround view camera.

The Kia Sorento comes at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 27.99 lakh for the base 2.2 diesel and Rs 29.49 lakh for the base 1.6L turbo GDI hybrid. The top-spec AWD Black Line variant is priced at Rs 40.39 lakh.


The Toyota Fortuenr is available at a starting price of Rs 34.76 lakh for the base 4x2 model and Rs 50.46 lakh for the range-topping GR-S variant.


Verdict


The Toyota Fortuner remains the preferred choice for buyers looking for rugged body-on-frame durability, high resale value, and heavy off-road performance.


However, the Kia Sorento comes as a tech-rich alternative at a lower entry price. It offers segment-first 2nd-row seat ventilation, Level 2+ ADAS, and a Turbo GDI hybrid AWD option. With all the tech features, the Sorento targets urban buyers looking for modern luxury and ride refinement.
