New Toyota Fortuner Set for a Major Makeover

Next-gen Toyota Fortuner to make its global debut on December 1, 2026. The SUV could get dual 12.3-inch screens and Level 2 ADAS. India launch is expected in 2027 with petrol and diesel engine options.

Toyota is preparing to unveil the next-generation Fortuner globally on December 1, 2026. The upcoming SUV is expected to receive major updates to its exterior design, interior, technology and safety features. It will replace the current-generation model, which has been on sale since 2016. Toyota South Africa has confirmed the global debut date, while the new Fortuner is expected to arrive in India sometime in 2027. Although the SUV is likely to retain its rugged character, several changes could make it more modern and feature-rich.

New Toyota Fortuner: Expected Design Changes

The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is expected to get a redesigned front fascia with a taller grille, a raised bonnet and sharper headlamps. Spy shots suggest a more upright front profile, pronounced wheel arches and prominent side steps. At the rear, the SUV could feature a redesigned tailgate and a connected LED light bar. Toyota's teaser has also hinted at new lighting elements, while the overall design could draw inspiration from the latest Hilux. These changes are expected to give the Fortuner a fresher appearance while maintaining its bold SUV styling.

Interior Could Get Major Upgrades

The cabin is expected to receive a significant technology upgrade. Higher variants could feature dual 12.3-inch displays, with one serving as the digital instrument cluster and the other as the infotainment screen. Other expected features include a 360-degree camera, wireless charging, powered and ventilated front seats, connected car technology and over-the-air software updates. A panoramic sunroof could also be offered. If these features make it to the production model, the new Fortuner could offer a more modern cabin experience than the outgoing SUV.

Engine Options Likely to Continue

The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is expected to retain the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. The 48V mild-hybrid diesel version, sold in India under the Neo Drive badge, could also continue. Toyota may offer manual and torque-converter automatic gearbox options. Selected variants are expected to retain four-wheel drive and a low-range transfer case for off-road use. The 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine could also remain available in India. However, Toyota has not confirmed the final engine line-up or performance figures for the new model.

More Safety Features Expected

Safety technology could be another major area of improvement. The next Fortuner is expected to receive an expanded Toyota Safety Sense package, potentially including Level 2 ADAS. Expected features include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. Test vehicles have reportedly shown radar equipment in the lower front bumper and camera hardware behind the windscreen. The final safety features may vary by market and variant.

Platform and Seven-Seat Layout

Reports suggest the new Fortuner could use an upgraded version of Toyota's IMV-based ladder-frame platform rather than switching to the TNGA-F architecture. The familiar seven-seat configuration is expected to continue. Toyota could also revise the suspension and chassis tuning to improve ride comfort and handling while preserving the SUV's off-road ability. More details about the platform and mechanical changes are expected to emerge at the global unveiling.

New Toyota Fortuner India Launch Timeline

Following its global debut on December 1, 2026, the next-generation Toyota Fortuner is expected to launch in India in 2027. The company has not yet announced the Indian launch date, pricing or final specifications. When it arrives, the SUV could compete with models such as the Kia Sorento, Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, MG Majestor and Volkswagen Tayron.
