The most anticipated vehicle has now been revealed in the form the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door. Yes, that is correct at the ongoing 2023 Delhi Auto Expo. Further bookings are now open for the upcoming off-roader in India.
Since Mahindra & Mahindra skipped the 2023 Auto Expo, we are yet to see the official launch of its biggest rival, the Thar 5-door. With both 4x4 SUVs competing in the same segment, who comes out on top? We compare the two head to head.

The Jimny 5-door is expected to launch around April 2023, with a starting price tag of Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). Maruti Suzuki has started accepting bookings for the SUV at a token amount of Rs 11,000. In comparison, the Thar 5-door will be unveiled during the first quarter of this year. While prices have not been revealed yet, the new model is rumoured to cost around Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh more than the 3-door 4x4 models which are priced between Rs 13.59 lakh to Rs 16.29 lakh (ex-showroom).

Feature-wise, the Jimny 5-door gets a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, analogue dials with a MID nestled in the middle, an audio setup from ARKAMYS, a rear-view camera and more. In terms of safety, you get 6 airbags, ESP with Hill Hold Assist, Hill Descent Control, and ABS with EBD. The Jimny also comes equipped with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system with a low-range gearbox and a manual transfer case.

Since the Mahindra Thar 5-Door is yet to be unveiled, the feature list is still speculative. However, recent spy shots have revealed the base design will remain largely similar with a few changes. There will be a new bigger infotainment system like seen one Scorpio N alongside a centre armrest. Other creature comforts would include climate control, an audio setup with roof-mounted speakers, connected car tech, a rear-view camera, and more. The Thar 5-door could also be offered in a 5 or 7-seat configuration with a hard-top option only. The SUV is expected to come fitted with a full-time 4x4 system alongside a mechanically locking rear differential and a low-range transfer case.
