Maruti Suzuki has revealed its much-anticipated mid-sized SUV, called the Victoris in the Indian market. Set to be the new flagship ARENA SUV, the new Maruti Victoris directly aims at the hugely popular Hyundai Creta. The company will leverage on the widespread ARENA dealership network to make this new SUV a huge success.
It is early to comment whether Maruti Victoris will manage to beat the Creta or not. However, the SUV has all the pedigree to be a huge success. The SUV is packed with multiple first features for any Maruti Suzuki car in India.
The new Victoris comes equipped with LEVEL-2 ADAS tech with features like adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, auto high beam and others. It comes with 8-speaker infinity sound system with Dolby Atmos for immersive audio system. Other key additions include powered tailgate with gesture control, ventilated front seats, 8-way powered driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof, and HUD.
The SUV also gets a game-changing underbody CNG tank, making it the country’s first model to get this system. Moreover, the Maruti Victoris is the country’s most fuel efficient SUV with hybrid version claims to deliver an ARAI certified mileage of 28.65kmpl.
The Creta has become a house-hold name and an aspirational product for many individuals. Despite rising competition, this Korean SUV holds 30-31 percent share in the mid-sized SUV category in FY25. The Grand Vitara is the second closest with close to 20% share. Creta’s Korean cousin, Kia Seltos accounts for around 12% of total sales in the mid-sized SUV category.
The reason behind the huge success of Creta is the availability of several segment-leading features, premium-looking interiors and a wide range of engine-gearbox combinations. It gets a diesel engine with manual and automatic gearbox, a turbo petrol with DCT and a naturally-aspirated petrol with manual and IVT. For enthusiasts, the Hyundai Creta gets a performance-oriented N-Line derivative. The wide range of options allow Hyundai to target wider audiences starting from semi-urban to Tier 1 cities. Moreover, Creta also gets an electric derivative.
Maruti Victoris lacks diesel engine option, which is still in huge demand in above 4 meter SUV category. In fact, diesel accounts for close to 50% of total Hyundai Creta sales in India. Diesel powered SUVs are still popular in Tier II, semi-urban and rural India, which is evident from the huge success of Mahindra.
Maruti Suzuki is adopting multi-powertrain options, excluding diesels. The company believes that hybrids and CNGs is a better alternative to diesel. With underbody CNG kit, Maruti Suzuki has ensured that customers will continue to enjoy bigger boot and higher efficiency.
Hyundai has already started working on the next-gen Creta, which is likely to be launched in our market in 2027. The next-gen Hyundai Creta will come with a hybrid powertrain, which is currently under development. It will first debut in the next-gen Kia Seltos, which is under testing phase.
