Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is all set to foray into the electric vehicle (EV) segment early next year. The first electric offering from the Japanese automaker will be a re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki eVX electric SUV, scheduled for release in the first half of 2025. Both models will share the platform, features, components, and powertrain but will have different design languages.
Production of the upcoming Toyota electric SUV and Maruti eVX will take place at Suzuki’s Gujarat manufacturing plant. Toyota will also export its EV to European, Japanese, and African markets. As mentioned above, the new Toyota electric SUV and its donor model (eVX) will have distinct design and styling. The former will derive its design inspiration from the Toyota Urban SUV concept that was unveiled last year. The SUV’s concept was based on an all-new born-electric platform, derived from Toyota’s 40PL electric skateboard architecture.
The Toyota Urban SUV concept, with a length of 4,300mm, width of 1,820mm, and height of 1,620mm, appears as long as the upcoming Maruti eVX. However, its height and width are 20mm shorter than its donor model. Both electric SUVs are likely to have a 2,700mm wheelbase. The SUV concept features Toyota’s familiar grille, C-shaped LED DRLs, a front bumper with a minimalist design, and C-pillar-integrated rear door handles.
The interior is still a mystery. However, the upcoming Toyota electric SUV is expected to have a minimalist design approach inside the cabin as well. It might feature a dual-screen setup functioning as an infotainment system and an instrument cluster, a floating center console with a rotary dial, a two-spoke steering wheel, a frameless rearview mirror, a 360-degree camera, and an ADAS suite.
Similar to the Maruti eVX, Toyota’s first electric SUV will feature a 60kWh battery paired with an electric motor. Its range is expected to be around 500km. It will be available with either an FWD setup or an AWD system.
