MG Windsor EV, launched in September 2024, is a true segment disruptor. Within just three months of its market arrival, this compact electric MPV commands 49 percent of JSW MG Motor India’s wholesales figures. It has consistently registered average monthly sales of over 3,000 units, surpassing the segment leader Tata Motors. Recently, the EV crossed the 15,000 units production milestone in the country. Several factors have been working in its favour, including government policies, lower running costs, spacious and tech-loaded cabin and competitive pricing. Let’s take a look at them:
The Windsor EV has been priced quite competitively against the segment leader – Tata Nexon EV. MG’s electric MPV is currently available within the price range of Rs 13.50 lakh – Rs 15.50 lakh, whereas the Nexon EV is priced from Rs 12.49 lakh – Rs 17.19 lakh. Compared to its arch rival, the Windsor EV has more features on-board along with the spacious cabin and rear seats with up to a 135-degree recline, ensuring ample legroom and enhanced comfort for occupants. Additionally, its lower running costs further enhance its value for money proposition.
The MG Windsor EV is a full-size MPV that offers ample space for 6-7 adult passengers. It also serves as an ideal choice for buyers looking for a large and comfortable family car. This electric MPV is also an attractive deal for the fleet and taxi operators, and corporate buyers who need comfortable commuter vehicle.
MG has introduced a unique Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental scheme with the Windsor EV, allowing customers to purchase the EV at a lower initial cost. Customers need to pay for the battery usage on pay-per-kilometre basis. According to the carmaker, buyers who purchase the EV along with the battery can save up to Rs 2.8 lakh over a compact ICE-powered SUV over a period of three years and nearly Rs 8.34 lakh over a midsize SUV.
MG has partnered with four third-party financiers for the BaaS rental program including Bajaj Finance Limited, VidyutTech Service Private Limited, Herofin Corp and Ecofy and Autovert Technologies Private Limited. The per kilometre battery rental chargers are Rs 3.5 for Bajaj, Herofin and VidyutTech, while Ecofy and Autovert charge Rs 5.8 per kilometre.
Furthermore, the MG Windsor EV is a beneficiary of multiple FAME-II subsidies and state-level EV incentives, lowering its ownership cost. Currently, EVs are subject to 5 percent GST, which is lower than that of the ICE-powered vehicles.
MG Windsor EV has minimalistic design approach both inside and out. For the rear seat occupant, the electric MPV offers “aero lounge seats” with 135 degrees recline, a center armrest, rear AC vents and adjustable headrests. With a 60:40 split ratio, the rear seats can be folded down to create more cargo space.
On the feature front, the Windsor EV offers a 9-speaker Infinity sound system, ventilated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, powered driver’s seat, a panoramic glass roof, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, ESC, a 360 degree camera, 6 airbags, and front and rear parking sensors.
To ensure the Windsor’s success, MG has focused on expanding its EV charging network by setting up fast chargers at dealerships and major locations. The carmaker is also providing home charging solutions and vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging capabilities.
Additionally, JSW MG Motor India is offering a lifetime warranty for the battery with unlimited kilometres for the first buyers of the Windsor EV. Customers will also have free access to public charging for the first year after purchase.
