Volkswagen India is gearing up to enter the highly competitive sub-4 metre SUV segment. VW’s sister brand, Skoda Auto is already selling Kylaq subcompact, which has been generating volumes ever since its market arrival. The upcoming Volkswagen subcompact SUV is likely to share its platform, powertrain, components and several features with the Kylaq.
While there is no official confirmation yet, the new model is expected to derive styling elements from the Volkswagen Tera, which was showcased at the Rio De Janeiro Carnival last year.
The new Volkswagen Tera SUV is expected to hit Indian roads sometime in 2027.
Prices of the new Volkswagen subcompact SUV are likely to be more or less similar to the Skoda Kylaq. We expect the new VW Tera to come in the price range of ₹8.00 Lakhs* – ₹8.00 Lakhs* (ex-showroom).
Visually, the upcoming Volkswagen Tera will look different from the Skoda Kylaq. It might feature a differently styled front grille, revised bumpers, new LED headlamps and taillamps and newly-designed alloy wheels.
The Tera, unveiled in Brazil last year, features a two-part LED DRL signature with slim headlamps, a bumper integrated grille in contrasting black finish and air intakes positioned at the outer edges of the bumper. Other design highlights include a bold shoulder line with muscular fenders, blacked out A and B-pillars, black roof, connected taillamps and a rear bumper with gloss black garnishes.
The new Volkswagen subcompact SUV could also offer a more premium feature set than the Skoda Kyalq. Features such as 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charger, leatherette upholstery, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keyless entry, a sunroof, and adjustable front seats are likely to be carried forward from the Kylaq.
On the safety front, the Volkswagen Tera is expected to offer six airbags standard along with ABS with EBD, an electronic differential lock, electronic stability control, Isofix child mounts and more.
While official engine details are still under the wraps, the new VW Tera is expected to borrow 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI engine from the Skoda Kylaq. This turbocharged petrol engine pushes out a healthy power of 115bhp and 178Nm of torque. In Kylaq, it does 0 to 100kmph sprint in 10.5 seconds, making it one of the fastest SUVs in its segment. Similar to the
Kylaq, the Tera is likely to come with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox options.
In the sub-4 metre SUV segment, the new Volkswagen Tera will face challenge from the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Maurti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Skoda Kylaq, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
