Volkswagen's New Compact SUV For India – Nexon & Brezza Rival

Volkswagen planning new subcompact SUV for India. It’s likely to share engine and features with the Skoda Kylaq.

Subcompact SUVs sell like hot cakes in India. These vehicles are highly popular among first-time buyers and customers upgrading from the small car segment due to their affordable pricing, compact footprints and multiple powertrain options. Most mainstream carmakers already have their offerings in this highly competitive segment, expect Volkswagen. However, that won’t be the case for much longer, as the German automaker is planning to launch a new sub-4 metre SUV by mid-2027.

In the midsize SUV segment, the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq share their platform, powertrains, components and features, while featuring different design languages. A similar approach is likely to be adopted for the upcoming Volkswagen subcompact SUV. Skoda Auto is already offering the Kylaq, which has emerged as a volume generator for the Czech automaker since its market arrival.

Different Styling

The new VW subcompact SUV is expected to feature a newly-designed grille, revised front and rear bumpers, new lights and tweaked tailgate. Speculations suggest that it might borrow several design elements from the Volkswagen Tera, which was showcased in Brazil last year.

On the exterior, the VW Tera features a black grille, slim headlamps with two-part LED DRL signature, pronounced shoulder line with muscular fenders, black finished A and B-pillars, rear bumper with gloss black garnishes and connected taillamps.

Features Shared With Kylaq?

In terms of features, Volkswagen’s sub-4m SUV is expected to offer a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, leather-wrapped steering, a sunroof, keyless entry and go, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charger, leatherette upholstery, TPMS, cruise control, multiple airbags and more.

Turbo-Petrol Power

Under the hood, the new Volkswagen subcompact SUV is expected to feature the Kylaq’s 1.0L, three-cylinder petrol engine, producing power worth 115bhp and 178Nm of torque. Both manual and torque convertor automatic gearboxes could be on offer. Components such as the suspension setup and braking system might also be sourced from the Skoda Kylaq.
