Volkswagen will launch a new sub-four-metre SUV in India by 2027. The compact SUV will share its platform and engine with the Skoda Kylaq. It will rival the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
Volkswagen is preparing to enter India's highly competitive sub-four-metre SUV segment with a new compact SUV based on the Skoda Kylaq. The new model is expected to arrive by 2027 and will become Volkswagen's smallest SUV in India. The upcoming SUV will share its platform and mechanical package with the Kylaq but will get a different design and positioning to create its own identity.
The new Volkswagen compact SUV will compete in one of India's biggest SUV segments. Key rivals will include the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO, along with other sub-four-metre SUVs. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed the name of the new model or its exact launch date. However, the company has confirmed that the SUV is being developed specifically for the Indian market.

The upcoming Volkswagen SUV will use the MQB A0 IN platform, which is already used by the Skoda Kylaq and several other Volkswagen Group models developed for India. Sharing the platform will help Volkswagen reduce development costs and speed up the introduction of the new SUV. However, the company has said that the Volkswagen model will have its own design and positioning. This means that while the two SUVs will share their underlying technology, they are expected to look and feel different.
The new Volkswagen SUV is expected to use the same 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine as the Kylaq. In the Skoda, this three-cylinder engine produces 114 bhp and 178 Nm. It is available with both manual and automatic gearbox options. The Volkswagen is expected to retain similar powertrain options, although the final specifications will be confirmed closer to its launch.
The upcoming compact SUV will become Volkswagen's smallest SUV in India. Currently, the Taigun is the company's smallest SUV in the country. The new model will also give Volkswagen a much lower entry point into the SUV market. The segment's strong demand could help the brand attract a wider group of customers, particularly those looking for a compact SUV with a European brand badge.
