Volkswagen is preparing a new sub-4-metre SUV for India. It could get a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. Manual and automatic gearbox options are expected.
Volkswagen is preparing to enter India's sub-4-metre SUV segment with a new model. The upcoming SUV will be the brand's first car in this segment since the Polo was discontinued in 2022. The new Volkswagen SUV is expected to share its platform and engine with the Skoda Kylaq, but it could get a different design and a sportier look. It is also likely to come with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, along with manual and automatic gearbox options.
Volkswagen has confirmed plans for a compact SUV for India, but the model's name, launch date and final specifications have not been announced yet. Here is what to expect from the upcoming model.

The upcoming Volkswagen SUV is expected to have a design that sets it apart from the Skoda Kylaq. While both models could share their underpinnings, Volkswagen is likely to give its SUV a different identity through changes to the exterior. The front could get a new grille, distinctive headlamps and redesigned bumpers. The rear is also expected to feature different tail lamps and bumper styling.
The SUV could ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, adding to its sporty appearance. Volkswagen may also offer a GT-Line variant with darker exterior details and a sportier overall look. However, the company has not revealed the production model's design yet. These details are based on expectations, and the final styling could be different.
Volkswagen is also expected to give the new SUV a cabin that looks different from the Skoda Kylaq. Possible changes could include a redesigned dashboard, centre console, door panels and seats. The brand may focus on a sportier cabin design to match the exterior styling.
A GT-Line version could get dark interior elements and other styling changes. However, the final variant lineup and features have not been confirmed. Details about the infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, sunroof and safety features are also awaited.
The upcoming SUV is expected to use Volkswagen's 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It could produce around 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox. Both versions are expected to send power to the front wheels.
This engine is already used in other Volkswagen Group models in India. Its familiar power delivery and gearbox choices could make the new SUV an option for those looking for a petrol-powered compact SUV. The fuel efficiency could be around 19 km/l, although the official figure has not been announced.
The upcoming Volkswagen SUV will enter a competitive segment with several established models. Its potential rivals could include the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
The Skoda Kylaq will also be an important model to compare with, as both SUVs are expected to share some mechanical components. Volkswagen will need to give its model a clear identity through its design, features and pricing. The final price will play an important role in deciding how well it competes with these SUVs.
