Skoda EVs Coming to India Next Year – Epiq, Peaq and Elroq in Focus

Skoda plans to bring global EVs to India in limited numbers next year. Epiq, Peaq and Elroq are among the models being considered. A locally produced, high-volume Skoda EV could follow once localisation is ready.

Skoda Auto India is planning to bring electric cars from its global lineup to India next year. The company is looking at limited-volume imports as it works on a long-term plan for electric cars in the country. The Skoda Epiq, Peaq and Elroq are among the global EVs that could be considered for India. The company has not confirmed which models will be brought to the country yet.

Skoda EVs Could Arrive in Limited Numbers

Skoda India Brand Director Ashish Gupta has confirmed that the company plans to bring global EVs to India early next year. The move will allow Skoda to enter the electric car market without waiting for a locally produced EV. Gupta said the company needs an electric car in its lineup as EV sales continue to grow in India.

However, these models are not expected to be aimed at high-volume sales initially. Since they would be imported, their prices are likely to be high under the current duty structure. The main aim will be to showcase Skoda's EV technology and build a presence in the growing electric car market.

Epiq, Peaq and Elroq in Focus

Skoda has a growing EV lineup in international markets, with the Epiq, Peaq and Elroq among its latest electric models. The Elroq is already one of Skoda's key EVs in Europe and could be one of the models considered for India. The Epiq is a smaller electric SUV, while the Peaq sits higher in Skoda's electric SUV range. Skoda has not confirmed India-specific specifications, prices or launch dates for any of these models.

Local EV Still on the Cards

While imported EVs could arrive first, Skoda is also working on localisation. The company believes high-volume electric cars can only be introduced in India when enough components are locally sourced. This would help reduce costs and make the cars more competitive. Skoda has not yet announced which EV will be locally manufactured in India.

Why Skoda Is Looking at EVs Now

The company says EV adoption in India has increased faster than expected in recent months. Rising fuel prices have also encouraged more customers to consider electric cars. Skoda also needs to prepare for stricter emission rules. According to the company, electrification will be an important part of meeting future regulatory requirements. This means the company cannot wait too long to establish its EV presence in India.

What About Hybrid Cars?

Skoda is also studying hybrid technology for India, but its plans remain uncertain. The company had earlier seen hybrids as a stronger opportunity than EVs in India. However, the limited growth of strong-hybrid cars over the past two years and the recent rise in EV demand have changed that view. The current tax structure is another challenge for imported hybrid and electric cars.

Skoda EV India Launch Plans

Skoda is expected to bring some of its global EVs to India in limited numbers next year. The company is yet to confirm the exact models and launch timeline. The Epiq, Peaq and Elroq are among the cars that could help Skoda establish its EV presence in India while the company continues to work on a more affordable locally produced electric model.
