Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor

Toyota had launched the Urban Cruiser Taisor compact SUV in the Indian market on April 3, 2024. The Taisor is essentially a re-badged version of the popular Maruti Suzuki Fronx. Maruti produces the Taisor at its own manufacturing facility and supplies it to Toyota for the retail market. It comes as a successor of the Urban Cruiser SUV, which was based on the older Vitara Brezza.

The Toyota Taisor is available with two engine options - a 1.2L NA petrol and a 1.0L turbo petrol. It comes with manual and automatic gearbox options. The SUV appears largely identical to the Fronx crossover, except for the few design changes.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is available in 4 trims - E, S, G and V - and in total of 10 variants. The Urban Cruiser Taisor price in India starts at Rs 7.74 lakh and goes up to Rs 12.88 lakh. All the prices are ex-showroom, Pan India.

Expert Opinion - We recommend you go for the S Plus variant of the Toyota Taisor. This variant gets a 1.2L NA petrol engine with 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. If you are looking at a more powerful 1.0L turbo engine, we suggest the G variant of the SUV. It comes with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. 

The Taisor S variant gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Other features include steering-mounted controls, power mirrors, LED reflector headlamps, auto headlamps and dual-function LED DRLs. It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels. 

The Taisor G variant gets 6 airbags, rear wiper & washer, rear camera, and height-adjustable driver seat. It also gets keyless entry with push-button start/stop and wireless phone charger, paddle shifters and colour MID.

Engine Specifications

The Urban Cruiser Taisor is available with two engines - a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol. The 1.2L Dual-Jet, Dual VVT engine is capable of producing 88.5bhp and a peak torque of 113Nm.

In the CNG mode, the engine produces 76.4bhp and 98.5Nm of torque. For transmission duties, the NA engine comes with a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic unit. The CNG version is only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces 98.69 bhp of maximum power and 147.6 Nm of peak torque. The engine is available with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox.

Mileage

The Taisor 1.2L manual claims to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of 21.7kmpl. The AMT version delivers 22.8kmpl. On the other hand, the CNG version returns a certified mileage of 28.5 km/kg.

The turbo version delivers an ARAI rated fuel economy of 21.5kmpl. The fuel economy drops to 20kmpl with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Exterior

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is essentially the Maruti Fronx with Toyota logo and some new design elements. It comes with a more crossover-ish design instead of an SUV. The front fascia has a trapezoidal grille with chrome garnish, flanked by LED headlamps.

The DRLs are connected via a chrome element. It features dual-headlamp setup with DRLs on top and main headlamp unit positioned on the lower bumper.

The lower bumper has wider air intake and silver finished faux skid plate. The crossover has a dual-tone exterior paint scheme with the roof finished in black. It gets chromed roof rails, while the flared wheel arches give it a rugged look.

It features machined alloy wheels, shark fin antenna and tapered roofline that gives it a sporty profile. The SUV has electrically foldable ORVMs, connected LED tail-lights, and dual-tone rear bumper.

Interior

Similar to the exterior, the Toyota Taisor has similar interiors as the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. The only change is the addition of Toyota badge, more prominently on the steering wheel. It retains the dual-tone black and maroon interior scheme.

The crossover comes with the same set of features as the Fronx. It features a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with voice recognition.

The new Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor measures 3995mm in length, 1765mm in width and 155mm in height. The crossover rides on 2520mm long wheelbase, while the ground clearance stands at 190mm. It comes with a boot space of 308-litres, which is expandable.

The new Taisor comes with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. The connectivity features include navigation, smartwatch connectivity, remote vehicle ignition and telematics.

Performance

The Taisor is available with Suzuki's 1.2L NA petrol engine that also powers the Fronx crossover. This engine is reliable, fuel efficient and offers decent performance. The other engine is the 1.0L turbo petrol engine with manual or torque convertor automatic gearbox options. 

The 1.0L engine is one of the most refined small turbo engines available in the market. The engine comes alive post 2000 rpm and it starts to work really well. It never feels underpowered even on long highway drives. However, a sixth gear in the manual version would help to achieve higher efficiency. 

The performance is good in town and the Taisor works well in the bumper-to-bumper traffic. The automatic gearbox works nicely with the 1.0L turbo unit. The upshifts are quick to achieve higher efficiency, but downshifts are not quick. For quick lane change and overtakes, we recommend you to use the paddle shifters. 

Comfort

The well-cushioned front seats are good enough to accommodate bigger size people. The seats offer good back and under thigh support; however, the softer cushioning compromises the comfort during longer drives. The second-row seats come with the same soft cushioning and offers decent back and underthigh support. However, the headroom space is not up to the mark due to sloping roofline. 

The bench-type seat is wide enough to accommodate two average Indian adults and a kid. The crossover comes with automatic AC with rear AC vents for added comfort. There are charging ports in the second-row to charge your devices.
