Toyota Plans Small Hybrid Cars to Drive Growth in India

Toyota plans to offer hybrid powertrain to smaller cars Aims to offer ADAS with more models New Maharashtra facility to add another 1 lakh annual capacity

A new media report claims that Toyota is evaluating its hybrid powertrain technology for the smaller car segments in India. The company aims to make its strong hybrid tech more accessible to mass-market buyers. Speaking to the media, Kie Takemiya, Vice President of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), said that he aims to extend hybrid tech to smaller vehicles.

"That's my wish list, also," Takemiya noted when asked about bringing strong-hybrid setups to compact cars. "We have so much confidence in hybrid technology. We made three lakh people happy already in the Indian market."

Toyota is yet to confirm the official launch timeline for the compact hybrid cars. However, the small hybrid cars, like hatchbacks or compact crossovers, could redefine fuel economy expectations for urban buyers.

India's Role in Toyota's Global Vision

Expanding Production Capacity: Sabari Manohar, Executive VP Sales-Service-Used Car Business at TKM, pointed to Toyota's upcoming production plant in Maharashtra as a clear indicator of Toyota's long-term commitment. This new plant will add another 1 lakh units annually to the brand's existing 3.42 lakh annual unit capacity at its twin Bidadi facilities in Karnataka.

Multi-Powertrain Strategy

The Japanese automaker is adopting multi-pathway strategy engineered to India's diverse geographical terrain and evolving charging infrastructure.

Engine Options: Diesel, CNG, Strong-Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).
Hybrid Engine: The brand's hybrid portfolio comprising the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross, Camry Hybrid and Vellfire - recently crossed the 3 lakh cumulative sales milestone in India.
Electric Expansion: Toyota is currently selling the Urban Cruiser Ebella as its only EV in India. However, the company is reportedly developing a new hybrid MPV for the domestic market.

ADAS & Safety

The Japanese automaker is pushing the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in India to help drivers navigate congested urban traffic. Toyota executives also stated that Indian car buyers are now ready to pay a premium for higher variants that pack comprehensive active and passive safety features.
