Next-gen Fortuner global debut on December 1, 2026 India launch expected in 2027
The much-awaited new-generation Toyota Fortuner is slated to make its global debut on the 1st of December, 2026. This has been officially confirmed by Toyota South Africa. The SUV is currently undergoing testing, and the recent spy shots provide valuable insights into what buyers can expect from the popular seven-seater model.
The next-generation Fortuner is likely to receive significantly design changes and an all-new interior along with a longer list of features. It is likely to draw heavy inspiration from the new Hilux pickup truck.
The new Toyota Fortuner will be based on the underlying IMV ladder-frame chassis architecture that also underpins the Toyota Hilux and the Land Cruiser FJ. The company has engineered the chassis for rugged SUV stance and harsh off-road usage, which remains a top-selling point in market regions like South Africa.
The SUV will retain the basic bodyshell; however, the SUV will retain multiple sheet metal. The SUV will retain the upright proportions associated with the SUV, and its styling will draw inspiration from the Toyota Hilux and other global Toyota SUVs.
The next-gen Fortuner has been caught testing numerous times, give us a much clearer look at its design changes. While the test mule is heavily covered in thick cloth, the new spy shots confirms that the legendary SUV is moving steadily closer to its production phase.
The all-new full-size SUV has a commanding, upright stance. It features a broad central mesh-pattern grille, flanked by substantial vertical housing actions. The upper grille merges into an angular headlamp and the horizontally placed DRL is placed beneath the bonnet line. The lower bumper houses neat horizontal elements and skid plate. The front design seems heavily inspired from latest Toyota global models, including the latest Hilux lifestyle pickup.
The SUV retains the rugged road presence, featuring a tall bonnet, an upright cabin and generous ground clearance. It comes with pronounced wheel arches, functional side steps, sharp multi-spoke alloy wheels, rising lower window line and darkened rear quarter glass. At the back, the SUV will have an all-new tailgate, bumper, a connected LED light bar and roof-integrated spoiler.
The next-gen Toyota Fortuner is likely to share the cabin layout with the latest Toyota Hilux. It is likely to feature a modern dashboard layout dominated by a larger touchscreen infotainment unit and a fully digital instrument console. The SUV is expected to be equipped with features like panoramic sunroof, powered and ventilated front seats, second-row ventilated seats, powered tailgate and others.
Another big upgrade is that the next-gen Fortuner will come with a radar and camera-based ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) tech, suggesting a major upgrade in active safety. It will offer features like autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind spot monitoring and others. For safety and security, the SUV is expected to get multiple airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a 360-degree surround view camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system and front and rear parking sensors.
The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is expected to retain the engine options, including a 2.8L turbo petrol and 2.7L naturally-aspirated petrol.
2.8L turbo diesel + 48V mild-hybrid setup: this engine produces 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The 48V mild-hybrid system assists during accelerations, and improves efficiency in stop-and-go traffic.
2.7L NA petrol: this engine churns out 164 bhp and 245 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, which sends power to the rear-wheels.
Drivetrain Options: 6-speed MT and 6-speed torque converter automatic, electric power steering, 4x4 drivetrain (Diesel Only), terrain modes and rear-differential lock.
